CONCORD, CA — Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Contra Costa Fire) has placed its seasonal firefighting helicopter, Copter 1, into service for the 2025 summer fire season.
The helicopter is stationed at the Byron Wildfire Center and will be available daily for wildfire response operations across the county during daylight hours. Copter 1 is a Type 2 helicopter capable of carrying 300 gallons of water. It’s equipped with a snorkel and pump system that allows it to quickly refill from open water sources or portable water tanks set up by ground crews. The helicopter is staffed seven days a week by an experienced pilot and one of Contra Costa Fire’s aviation officers.
By having an aerial resource ready to respond within Contra Costa County, Copter 1 will help crews reach fires faster, especially in the early stages, when every minute counts.
“A rapid initial attack is one of the most effective strategies we have in limiting the spread of wildfires. The addition of Copter 1 significantly enhances our ability to deliver water to the fireline within minutes of dispatch, giving ground crews a critical advantage in protecting life, property, and natural resources.” Wildland Battalion Chief Tom Zurflueh.
This year’s seasonal helicopter program is being funded through a partnership with PG&E who has provided $1 million to support operations, while the remaining cost is covered by Contra Costa Fire’s general fund. The overall program budget is $2 million.
Copter 1 is expected to remain available throughout the summer and into early fall, depending on fire activity and weather conditions.
Contra Costa Fire encourages residents to stay informed and prepared as wildfire conditions peak.
