On Monday, City of Brentwood Mayor Susannah Meyer became the latest mayor in Contra Costa County to issue a statement regarding immigration enforcement.
“As Mayor of Brentwood, I want to reaffirm our City’s commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful community for all who live, work and visit here, regardless of immigration status.
In accordance with California law, including the California values Act (Governance Code 7284.6), the City of Brentwood does not inquire about immigration status in the course of providing services. We do not engage in immigration enforcement, and we do not hold individuals based solely on federal immigration detainers. These principles reflect not only state law, but also our local values.
We recognize that public safety and trust are build on meaningful relationships with our residents. The Brentwood Police Department has made clear that its focus is on protecting the public and addressing threats to safety and not enforcing federal immigration law. Our City’s policies are intended to ensure that all residents feel safe when seeking services, reporting crimes, or engaging with City staff.
Brentwood is a community where everyone should be treated with dignity and fairness. We are richer and more vibrant because of our diverse community and our desire to be good neighbors, and we enrich our lives by sharing food, culture, and customers. We are stronger united.
We will continue to stand by our values of inclusion, safety, and respect for all.”
She added, if you have any questions or need support, I encourage you to contact the Brentwood Police Department, Stand Together Contra Costa at https://standtogethercontracosta.org or the Bay Area Immigration Institute’s Brentwood website at https://iibayarea.org Both are trusted local resources for immigration-related support and legal services.
