Just after midnight, a fireworks explosion in the City of Antioch resulted in one critical patient and four others injured.

According to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, they responded to a report of multiple people injured on Spanos St at approximately 12:17 am July 5.

When Paramedics and fire arrived they discovered five people injured when a large industrial grade firework exploded.

According to Tracie Dutter, assistant chief of Contra Costa County Fire, confirmed the incident occurred in the 2200 block of Spanos St where residents were gathered for a Fourth of July celebration.

“We received a report of injuries due to fireworks and when we responded, we found 1 critical patient and 4 additional patients with minor injuries. In total, we transported 4 people and 1 person transported themselves to the hospital,” said Dutter.

It is unclear, with the industrial grade fireworks, if any arrests or citations were made by either Contra Costa County Fire or the Antioch Police Department.

According to preliminary information, CONFIRE saw less firework related calls in 2025 when compared to 2024. CONFIRE is expected to make a presentation to the Board of Supervisors at an upcoming board meeting.
