Contra Costa County Public Works Receives $4.3 Million for the Verde K-8 Safe Routes to School Project in North Richmond

North Richmond, CA – The Contra Costa County Public Works Department (Public Works) received $4,360,000 in grant funding from the Active Transportation Program (ATP) to construct sidewalk improvements along Market Avenue between Fred Jackson Way and 7th Street, and curb extensions at the intersection of Verde Street and Giaramita Street. Trees are also proposed to be planted on the south side of Market Avenue to provide shade and enhance the street landscaping through urban greening.

This project will provide safe access for all users by widening the sidewalks and replacing the existing landscaping strips with concrete sidewalks. This project will narrow the road travel lanes along Market Avenue, which will encourage drivers to reduce their speed. This project will also add new streetlights, upgrade the existing streetlights with brighter bulbs, and install speed feedback signs along Market Avenue to increase driver awareness. On-street parking will remain available on both sides of Market Avenue after the project. Construction is expected to begin no earlier than 2027.

The ATP grant will also fund Contra Costa Health (CCH) to implement a pedestrian and bike safety outreach program for the community spanning five years. The program aims to educate students, school faculty, and community members about pedestrian and bicycle safety around the roadways of North Richmond. CCH will provide encouragement, engagement, and education programming through community outreach such as participation in community events, walking field trips, bike rodeos, walking school buses, classroom presentations, and caregiver events.

The County’s grant is one of 34 awarded to metropolitan California local governments, totaling $61 million from the State’s Active Transportation Program.
