Benicia, California – The Benicia Unified School District (BUSD) Board of Education has named Chris Calabrese as its top choice for the District’s next Superintendent, with final approval expected on September 4, 2025, following a validation visit to his current district.
Calabrese, who serves as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources in the Brentwood Union School District, emerged as the leading candidate after a months-long search that included input from teachers, staff, parents, students, and community members on the qualities they value most in a leader.
“It’s an honor to be selected as the finalist for Benicia Unified,” Calabrese said. “Benicia is a community that cares deeply about its schools. I’m eager to partner with our educators, families, and community to ensure every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally. Together, we can build on the District’s tradition of excellence while embracing the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
BUSD Board President Grubbs praised Calabrese’s wide-ranging experience, noting his leadership roles spanning preschool through high school, as well as at both the site and district levels. “His work as an assistant superintendent of HR, high school teacher, vice principal at the elementary and middle school levels, and as an elementary principal gives him a unique and well-rounded perspective—one that’s a great match for our District.”
The Board will visit Brentwood Union School District in the coming weeks as the final step before the anticipated appointment.
