The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office reports that a suspected DUI driver rear ended a Lafayette patrol vehicle on Friday.
According to the Sheriff, on Friday, August 22, 2025, at about 2:18 PM, a marked Lafayette police vehicle was stopped in traffic on the 3600 block of Mt. Diablo Boulevard.
A driver rear-ended the police vehicle causing major damage to the front of his vehicle and the rear of the patrol vehicle. The impact caused the patrol vehicle to collide with the vehicle in front, causing minor damage.
As officers assessed the scene, a small fire ignited in the trunk of the patrol vehicle which was later extinguished.
Two Lafayette police officers and the first driver were treated and released at a local hospital.
That driver was later arrested. He is identified as 67-year-old Kevin Bell of Walnut Creek. He was booked into Martinez Detention Facility on two felony charges: driving under the influence causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher. He is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.
