Letter: Gabe Family Parts Ways With Recall Group, Initiates New Online Petition

Last month, we announced our decision to separate from the recall group.  This was a difficult decision, but unfortunately, we are no longer interested in pursuing it and have withdrawn from the 10 proponents when they refile.  Our exit from the group is driven by our wish to cease participation in the recall group itself. Indeed, I was the one who started the campaign to recall District Attorney Diana Becton. We continue to support her recall and urge you to keep backing this important cause, even though we are no longer involved.

Three years prior, we initiated the online petition titled “DA Diana Becton, File Charges Against Alicia Coleman-Clark” on Change.org. A year later, upon our attorney’s recommendation, we rebranded it as “Justice for Alexis Gabe.” This petition received close to 13,000 signatures. It has drawn significant media coverage and considerable public interest. It undoubtedly influenced Diana Becton’s neglect of our family’s request for a meeting and her inaction regarding the potential filing of charges against Alicia Coleman-Clark.

Today, we have officially launched a new online petition titled “Becton Resign.” Its purpose is quite similar to the previous petition, which is to raise awareness. This petition is not affiliated with the recall movement, but we share a common goal… which is to remove Diana Becton from her position. The “Becton Resign” petition is dedicated to our daughter, Alexis, and other victims of crime. It is one of the few actions I can take at this time, as pursuing the mother as an accessory is no longer viable due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

We are also focusing our efforts on the very first upcoming awarding of The Alexis P. Gabe Scholarship for Visual Arts, which was initiated by the We Get It Foundation.  This heartfelt initiative is dedicated to fostering the artistic talents of young creators within the neurodivergent community. The Alexis P. Gabe Scholarship for Visual Arts aims to provide opportunities for artistic expression across various mediums, such as painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. By granting funds that can be utilized for educational purposes or to purchase materials, we strive to empower young artists to explore their creativity and develop their unique voices by following in her footsteps.  The application submission period closed on August 31st, and the scholarship recipient will be chosen on January 1, 2026.

For additional details regarding this scholarship, kindly check out the We Get It Foundation’s Facebook page or website. You are also welcome to explore our Facebook page “Justice for Alexis Gabe” for further information about our new online petition, “Recall Becton.”

On August 21, the petition to recall District Attorney Becton was refiled. The following statement was issued:

The Petition to Recall District Attorney Diana Becton will be Refiled to Maximize the Success of the Movement to Restore Public Safety After careful consideration, the Recall District Attorney Diana Becton Team has made the strategic decision to refile the petition to recall Diana Becton. Refiling the petition resets the clock to collect the signatures needed to place the recall on the ballot, all donations will be transferred into the refiled recall, and the vote to recall Diana Becton will be placed on the June 2026 primary ballot eliminating the need for a special election.

We are confident that refiling the recall increases the likelihood of success by optimizing voter engagement and maximizing the campaign’s exponentially growing momentum. The communities’ overwhelming support of the recall of Diana Becton has been an inspiration to the Recall Team and further solidified our commitment to the recall.

The Gabe Family has been unfailing in their pursuit of justice for Alexis, and for all of the families of crime victims who have suffered as a result of Diana Becton’s failed policies, and we are grateful to them for their commitment to the Recall of Diana Becton.

Working together, the voters of Contra Costa County will restore  public safety to our county by recalling District Attorney Diana Becton.
