Meals on Wheels Diablo Region is asking for help in an attempt to save providing Breakfast bags to its clients. Without help, it announced it will end the Breakfast Bag program effective October 2, 2025.
This comes less than a week after the Contra Costa County pulled a $277 contract with Meals on Wheels due to federal funding being pulled. According to the contract, it would have allowed Meals on Wheels Diablo Region to deliver the CalFresh Healthy Living Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to provide evidence-based nutrition education and obesity prevention services for the period October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026
Here is the message released on Saturday:
Meals on Wheels Diablo Region launched the Breakfast Bag program in 2020 to provide additional support for vulnerable older adults during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a small effort serving about 100 seniors has grown to reach more than 500 clients each week, with demand continuing to rise.
The program was initially made possible through Contra Costa County funding and temporary pandemic relief dollars. However, as the costs for groceries, fuel, and other necessities have risen, the demand for Breakfast Bags has also outpaced the funding available to sustain it. Despite our best efforts to secure ongoing support, we have made the difficult decision to conclude the Breakfast Bag program effective October 2, 2025.
We know how meaningful this service is to many of our clients, and we are actively pursuing new funding opportunities with the hope of bringing the program back in a more sustainable way. In the meantime, our flagship home-delivered meal program will continue serving over 1,900 local seniors every week without interruption. Our commitment remains the same: to ensure the most food-insecure older adults in our community continue to receive the nutrition and support they need to live safely and independently at home.
