Pleasant Hill, CA — A large, mature Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) in Pleasant Hill Park, known affectionately by many as the Hospice “Tree of Lights”, fell late last night onto Gregory Lane blocking the roadway for most of the day. Fortunately, there were no injuries or property damage.

District staff quickly responded with City crews to secure the area and coordinate the clearing of the roadway. Cleanup and safety assessments are still underway. Gregory Lane is now open to traffic in both directions.

The oak was last inspected by a certified arborist approximately two years ago, which is within the standard inspection cycle for mature trees. At that time, the tree was showing signs of aging and has been under annual supervision by park maintenance staff. The tree ultimately fell due to natural causes. Portions of the oak will be recycled and used in District parks.

“This tree held a special place in our community,” said Michelle Lacy, General Manager of the Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District. “Since 2013, residents have gathered under its branches to participate in the Hospice of the East Bay’s Tree of Lights ceremony, honoring loved ones who have passed. For the decades prior to 2013, this long-standing oak provided shade, holiday lights, and enjoyment to generations of residents. We share in the community’s sadness over the loss of this tree.”

The District is working closely with Hospice East Bay to determine how best to continue the annual Tree of Lights tradition and assess alternative tree candidates if possible before the scheduled Pleasant Hill Tree of Lights ceremony on November 5, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.
