The City of Pleasant Hill announced it has won a transportation award for it efforts on Contra Costa Boulevard.
According to the city, A recently completed transportation project in the City of Pleasant Hill has received an award from the Bay Area Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. The City of Pleasant Hill, and its project design team Sanbell, received the Transportation Award for Complete Streets for the Contra Costa Boulevard Complete Streets Improvement Project.
In its statement outlining the award, the ITE stated, “The City partnered with Sanbell to transform this corridor into a safe, connected, and sustainable multimodal street that reflects the Complete Streets philosophy.”
The Contra Costa Boulevard project examined historical collision data and factored it into a design intended to make the transportation corridor more safely accessible to all users.
Some of the design features of the project include:
- Installation of Class II buffered bike lanes on both sides of the corridor
- Introduced bicycle video detection systems to enhance safety
- Upgraded curb ramps to full ADA compliance
- Added pedestrian LED lighting and audible push buttons to improve night visibility
The project also worked to be more environmentally friendly through such methods as the installation of green infrastructure; construction of 1,000 linear feet of recycled water pipeline; planting drought tolerant landscaping to reduce maintenance costs and enhance aesthetics.
The ITE lauded the project for its innovation and scalability, calling it a blueprint for transforming mid-sized arterial corridors throughout the Bay Area.
“Winning transportation awards such as these directly correlates to our deep commitment to maintaining the safety of our residents,” says Pleasant Hill Mayor Zac Shess. “I’m pleased that the ITE recognized the complexity of the overall project and commended our ability to work with partners to deliver a safer commute experience for all those traveling on this busy corridor.”
