For many animals in Contra Costa County, 2025 marked a new beginning—thanks to the tireless efforts of K911 Animal Rescue.
Based in Antioch, the nonprofit rescue continued its mission of keeping cats and dogs out of overcrowded shelters, off kill lists, and placing them into loving, permanent homes.
Over the course of the year, K911 Animal Rescue took in 1,425 cats and dogs, successfully adopting out 1,086 cats and 149 dogs—numbers that reflect both the scale of the need and the organization’s deep commitment to meeting it.
What sets K911 apart is its willingness to say “yes” when others cannot. The rescue does not shy away from animals with special needs, including tripod pets, blind animals, and those with mild cerebellar hypoplasia.
“We have committed fosters who are dedicated to taking in animals that are often overlooked,” said Kathy Cabrera, president of K911 Animal Rescue. “Those animals deserve the same chance at a loving home.”
Founded in February 2015, K911 celebrated its 10-year anniversary last year—a milestone that highlights a decade of lifesaving work powered almost entirely by volunteers, foster families, and community support.
The organization’s mission is simple but far-reaching: to rescue, rehabilitate, and place animals in the best homes possible. That work begins with pulling the animals most in need from local shelters, high-kill shelters, and the surrounding community. Once in care, each animal receives necessary medical treatment, including vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, and microchipping, before being placed in a safe and loving foster home to prepare them for adoption.
In 2025, K911 expanded its impact even further by taking over the Rivertown Cats Project, a community cat initiative in Antioch’s downtown Rivertown district. The project maintains eight feeding stations, where dedicated volunteers provide food twice daily. K911 also ensures the cats are fixed and vaccinated—an essential step in reducing overpopulation and improving the overall health of the community cat population.
K911 Animal Rescue operates entirely through donations from generous supporters, along with fundraising events held throughout the year. Those contributions help ensure that no animal is turned away simply because their needs are greater.
Sunday Adoptions:
For those looking to meet their next furry family member, K911 hosts Sunday adoption events every week from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at PetSmart in Concord, located at 1700 Willow Pass Road. Adoptable cats can also be found at PetSmart locations in Walnut Creek and San Leandro.
Today, K911 Animal Rescue remains a vital force throughout East County, Contra Costa County, Alameda County, and the Central Valley—proof that compassion, commitment, and community can change lives, one animal at a time.
