SACRAMENTO – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced his proposed framework and vision for the 2026-2027 California State Budget. Assemblymember Avila Farias released the following statement:

“Making California more affordable is how we make families thrive. That is why this year’s budget should be all about giving people more financial breathing room without losing sight of long-term financial stability and prioritizing smart, directed spending.

“The Governor’s budget proposal includes difficult choices responding to the unjustified and vindictive withholding of federal funds by the Trump Administration which are projected to result in $1.4 billion worth of unnecessary costs, driving up health care costs and reducing food assistance to over 3 million families.

“I am particularly pleased to see funds put toward universal access to free transitional kindergarten and a sustainable aviation fuel investment that will improve air quality and protect critical Contra Costa County jobs. I will work to expand this investment to renewable diesel fuel, increasing our climate impact while supporting economic growth.

“However, this proposal has a long way to go when it comes to affordable housing. The Legislature is once again working from zero. As co-chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Housing Finance and Affordability, I am committed to finding solutions that will bring down the rising cost of housing in California and increase the construction of affordable homes.

“Over the next several months, I will work closely with my colleagues to negotiate and pass a state budget that provides the best outcomes for our community and state.”
