Gioia, Carlson Run Unopposed, Primary Elections in Contra Costa County

by CC News

On Friday, Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors Ken Carlson and John Gioia will continue serving  as no one filed paperwork to run against them.

” I filed my candidacy papers this week to run for re-election for another 4-year term, and no one filed to run against me by the deadline. I’m honored to continue my work to make our communities healthier, safer, stronger and more equitable! I love working with many of you and my sleeves are rolled up to continue our fight,” said Gioia on Friday.

With County Assessor Gus Kramer announcing retirement, three candidates seek the position which include:

  • Nick Spinner
  • Kismat Kathrani
  • Vince Robb

Meanwhile, Clerk-Recorder Kristin Braun Connelly received news she has a challenger in Pratima Sonavne who filed Friday at 4:22 pm. Contra Costa CountAuditor Peter Karumbi and Treasurer Dan. M. Mierzwa both filed and are unopposed. Both will remain in office.

Richmond

Richmond

L to R: Eduardo Martinez and Claudia Jimenez

With the passage of Measure J, the City of Richmond now will hold primary elections for its mayor and council seats – a winning candidate must receive 50%+1 of the vote. Meaning if a candidate does not win more than 50% majority vote, the top 2 candidates move onto a November runoff.

The residents of Richmond will have 5 choices for mayor, including two Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA) candidates in incumbent Mayor Eduardo Martinez who is being challenged by Councilmember Claudia Jimenez.  The RPA came out and endorsed Jimanez. Other candidates include Ahmad Anderson, Demnlus Johnson and Mark Wassberg.

  • In District 2, Councilmember Cesar Zepeda was unchallenged and will remain on the council.
  • In District 3, Councilmember Doria Robinson is being challenged by Brandon Evans.
  • In District 4, Councilmember Soheila Bana is being challenged by Keycha Gallon and Jamin Pursell.

County Superintendent of Schools

It will be Antioch vs. Brentwood in the County Superintendent of school’s race. Antioch Unified School Board President Jag Lathan will square off against 17-year Brentwood Union School District Superintendent Dana Eaton.

Eaton has come out strong with a strong endorsement list, including current County Superintendent Lynn Mackey along with Superintendents Dr. Adam Clark (Mt. Diablo Unified School District), Dr. Janet Schulze (Pittsburg Unified School District) Marie Morgan (Walnut Creek Unified School District) just to name a few, along with 16 school board members from around the county along with many others on his website.

Lathan on the other hand, has made questionable decision while on the school board which included the questionable hire of Superintendent Dr. Darnise R Williams, jumping school board member pay up from $400 to $2,000 per month while now having to layoff nearly 300 employees.
