On Sunday, a boating crash injured 6 in Contra Costa County during the high school state qualifier fishing tournament.
The crash occurred in unincorporated Brentwood in the 4500 block of Orwood just before 7:00 am with reports of at least 3 people in the water. By 7:20, all occupants were back at the marina. Upon arrival by Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, it was confirmed 6 patients total, with 5 minor injuries and 1 moderate injury.
According to Battalion Chief Brandon Burruss, he confirmed the boat accident and 6 total patients.
Barry Sterud explained there is a high school open challenge event for bass fishing (5 fish), a team consists of 2 anglers and an adult boater. According to Sterud, there was a collision and another boater stopped for assistance, and he towed the boat back to the ramp.
According to the tournament, Bass Federation and Student Angler Federation, there were 50 teams participating from all over the state from San Diego to Shasta – with the national championships to be held later this year in Cumberland, Kentucky.
The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office and AMR also responded. A medical helicopter was requested but later cancelled.
Afternoon Update: a boater would remain in the hospital overnight for observation while one of the kids sustained broken ribs and a punctured lung. According to a witness, two boats collided causing one of the boats to go over another.
