An elderly woman was injured Wednesday after a vehicle struck Safeway in the City of Martinez.
On April 22, 2026, at approximately 3:46 PM, the Martinez Police Department responded to the Safeway located at 6688 Alhambra Ave, regarding a vehicle that crashed into the side of the building.
When officers arrived on scene, they contacted the driver, a 76-year-old female, who was not injured as a result of the collision. She advised that, while attempting a parking maneuver, she became confused between the brake and gas pedals. As she was parking, she depressed the accelerator, causing her vehicle to jump the curb, damage several potted plants, and collide with the east side of the building near the north entrance/exit. The force of the collision caused an ice machine to fall and strike a 71 year-old female customer inside the store.
The elderly female customer fell and struck her head on the ground. She was conscious and breathing when officers arrived with medical personnel. The elderly female customer was transported by ambulance to John
Muir Medical Center in Concord as a precaution.
The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The cause of the collision was determined to be driver error, and it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor.
