Antioch, CA — Danny Wagner of Bay Point won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. It was the first win for him in this division at Antioch, and it marks the sixth different division in which he’s won a Main Event at the track. Wagner is the reigning IMCA California State and Watsonville champion, and he won the Main Event at Watsonville Speedway a night earlier.

Heat race winners Mark Garner of Antioch and Wagner raced into first and second at the start. Wagner made a backstretch pass on Garner to grab the lead on the fifth lap, and a yellow flag waved for a three-car crash in Turn 4 a lap later. Wagner maintained the lead on the restart with Trevor Clymens of Brentwood slipping past Garner for second. Alfred Johnson of Antioch was involved in his second yellow flag incident on the eighth lap.

Wagner continued to set the pace on the restart with Garner riding the outside around Clymens for second. Brentwood’s Fred Ryland followed Garner into third and made an inside pass on Garner in Turn 4 on the 10th lap to claim second. James Graessle of Antioch brought out a yellow flag on Lap 12. Garner managed to make an outside pass on Ryland for second on the restart as Wagner continued to lead. Garner and Ryland battled fiercely for second with Ryland reclaiming the spot for good on Lap 16. Wagner went on to win ahead of Ryland, and Atwater’s Tanner Thomas went inside Garner in Turn 4 on Lap 19 for third. Clymens and Antioch’s Al Johnson rounded out the Top 5.

Hunter Hammett of Oakley won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. Hammett gained the lead late when Aidan Ponciano of Oakley pitted and went on to score his second-straight win. The victory keeps Hammett in the point lead after four races.

Oakley’s James East set the early pace at the start ahead of Ponciano and Nicholas Garner of Antioch. Both Jewell Crandall of Antioch and James Thomson of Pittsburg got past Garner on the third lap, and a yellow flag waved for Maddie Motts of San Pablo on Lap 5. East chose the outside on the restart, but Ponciano raced into the lead. Thomson slipped past Crandall for third, but a yellow flag waved again on Lap  7. Ponciano stayed with the outside and continued to lead the restart as Hammett and Charlie Bryant of Oakley settled into second and third

The race then had a trio of yellow flags with the third one slowing the pace for Nicholas Garner on Lap 15. Ponciano had developed a smoking problem and pitted during the caution period. Hammett inherited the lead ahead of Bryant and Crandall. As Hammett pulled away, Bryant and Crandall had a fierce duel for second. An inside pass on the front stretch on Lap 19 gained Crandall the runner-up spot. Hammett won by a straightaway ahead of Crandall, Bryant, East and Thomson.

Troy Foulger of Oakley had a double-win evening in IMCA Stock Car and Modified competition. It was the second win of the season for the reigning Modified champion in both divisions, and it was his 89th career win across multiple divisions at the track.

In the Stock Car division, Foulger led at the start ahead of heat race winner Jason Robles of Rio Vista and State point leader Justin Villanueva of Atwater. Foulger gradually pulled away from the pack, and Robles had a comfortable advantage over everybody else in second. The battle was close between Villanueva, Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista and Fred Ryland at Brentwood during the final 10 laps. At the checkered flag, Foulger was the winner in front of Jason Robles, Villanueva, Kenneth Robles and Ryland.

The turnout was light in the IMCA Modifieds with four competitors, but the field included Foulger, Andrew Pearce of Oakley and Ryan McDaniel of Olivehurst. Foulger bolted ahead at the green flag with Pearce and McDaniel in close pursuit. Trying to make a run on Foulger, Pearce spun in Turn 4 for a Lap 9 yellow flag. Foulger led McDaniel and Pearce on the restart, but McDaniel ended up spinning in Turn 2 for a Lap 13 yellow flag. McDaniel and Eric Berendsen of Antioch both retired, and Foulger led Pearce on the restart. Pearce ended up spinning in Turn 2 on the final lap as Foulger claimed the victory.

Devon Zuffa of Oakley won the 15 lap 600 Micro Sprint Main Event. A week earlier, Zuffa appeared to be headed for victory when his car lost power. He rebounded nicely by winning the feature and the heat race.

Zuffa jumped into the early lead and ahead of previous winner Buddy Chappell of San Jose and Aniyah Scott of Brentwood. Rookie Gabriel Monroy of Antioch fell out early, and fifth place Charlie Kight of Antioch also headed for the infield. Zuffa set a good pace and brought it home to victory, followed by Chappell, Scott and Ryan Dotson of Fremont.

The County Fair is promoting an AMA Motorcycle event next Saturday night. The next auto racing event will be the Larry Damitz Memorial on May 30th. The Xtreme Late Models and Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks will be in action along with the Wingless Spec Sprints, Valley Sportsman/Hardtops and the Dwarf Cars.
