Martinez, CA – The Contra Costa County Probation Department proudly commemorated the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated multi-use courtyard at the John A. Davis Juvenile Hall, marking a significant investment in youth well-being and family engagement.
Probation Department staff, County leadership, community partners, and stakeholders came together to recognize the completion of a project intended to enhance the rehabilitative experience for youth. The transformed outdoor space features a multi-sport recreational court and flexible gathering space for programming, wellness activities, and family-centered engagement, reflecting the Department’s continued commitment to creating healing-centered environments that foster positive youth development.
“This courtyard represents far more than a physical renovation—it reflects our commitment to creating both opportunities and spaces where young people can heal, grow, and thrive,” said Esa Ehmen-Krause, Chief Probation Officer, “Positive environments matter, and this new space allows the possibility not only for recreation, but for mentorship, meaningful family interaction, and personal development.”

“The opening of this space is a reflection of what is possible through collaboration and a shared commitment to the well-being of the youth we serve,” said Tamara Gusman-Taylor, the Probation Director responsible for oversight of the John A. Davis Juvenile Hall, who shared that the youth were consulted about every aspect of the courtyard design and renovation.
