Pleasanton, Calif. – On Thursday, May 21 at 11am, the Alameda County Fair hosted a processional ceremony as fragments from the Twin Towers, including a large steel beam, were escorted onto the Fairgrounds by police and first responders. These pieces will be on display throughout the entirety of the Fair as a special exhibit remembering the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The procession began from North Flynn Road on top of the Altamont Pass in Livermore, CA, with the California Highway Patrol orchestrating the road shutdown to safely guide the arrival. The procession included a 30-motorcycle escort from police officers across various Alameda County agencies, including the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Dublin Police Services, Alameda Police Department, Berkeley Police Department, East Bay Regional Parks Police, Union City Police Department, Newark Police Department, San Leandro Police Department, Oakland Police Department, Livermore Police Department, and Pleasanton Police Department.
Alameda County Fair staff and event attendees welcomed the procession upon arrival to the Fairgrounds, where military and public safety aviation assets—including helicopters from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and East Bay Regional Parks Police—also participated in the event. Honor Guard members from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and Alameda County Fire Department took part in ceremonial honors, while Alameda County Fire Department fire engines supported the procession route.
The “Rising Together: In Remembrance of 9/11” exhibit will showcase the historic beam, which is owned in conjunction by generational carnival families of Debbie Helm and Tom Davis and brought to Northern California in partnership with Butler Amusement. The exhibit will serve as a meaningful tribute to the civilians, pilots, flight attendants, and first responders whose lives were lost, featuring a wall of names in their remembrance.
“The Alameda County Fair has always been a place where our community comes together,” said Angel Moore, COO of the Alameda County Fairgrounds. “This memorial provides an important opportunity to honor those we lost, recognize the courage of our heroes, and reflect on the service, unity and resilience that continues to unite us all.”
The exhibit is especially meaningful this year as the Fair recognizes America 250 and marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, offering the community a powerful tribute rooted in remembrance, patriotism and unity.
