Antioch, CA — Grabbing the lead after a fierce side by side battle with Paul Guglielmoni of Vacaville, Bobby Hogge IV won the 25 lap Larry Damitz Memorial for the Xtreme Late Models Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. He became the third different winner in four series races, while Rod Oliver of Yuba City gained the point lead.
Heat race winners Guglielmoni and Andrew Odgers of Mariposa shared the front row for the feature race. Championship contender Anthony Slaney of Martinez had motor issues and only ran a couple of laps before pulling off in order to get points. Guglielmoni charged into the lead at the green flag, followed by Ray Trimble of Auburn and Odgers. Terry Kaiser of Vacaville brought out a caution flag after two laps, and Guglielmoni led the hard-charging Hogge and Trimble on the restart. A final yellow flag waved on Lap 3 for Shawn DeForest of Livermore, and that’s when Slaney retired from the race.
The battle was on when the green flag waved as Guglielmoni led Hogge and Trimble. The lead duo pulled away from the pack as Hogge began looking for a way around Guglielmoni. Hogge was making strong moves to the inside, and he finally got by on Lap 16. Trimble slipped past Guglielmoni for second on Lap 19. Hogge beat Trimble by a straightaway, and an inside pass in Turn 4 of the final lap put Oliver into third. Guglielmoni settled for fourth ahead of Odgers.
Jewell Crandall of Antioch capped an outstanding night of racing with her 25 lap Main Event victory. In doing so, she collected the $1,300 bounty for beating Hunter Hammett of Oakley. Crandall had earlier won her eight lap heat race and picked up the $200 price from Todd Gomez for winning the Dash For Cash. Her clean sweep effort put her firmly into the championship conversation.
Incoming point leader Hammett started his night on a sour note when mechanical issues ended his heat race effort prematurely. It didn’t get any better when he found himself in the B Main and didn’t finish. At that point, Hammett wasn’t going to be in the Main Event, but Promoter Chad Chadwick made the call to give him a provisional start. Chadwick reasoned that the crowd came to see the Hunter Hammett Bounty Race and it made no sense for him not to be in that race. He would receive no points, regardless of where he finished.
After a restart that saw Aidan Ponciano of Oakley take a wild ride out the Turn 1 exit, San Pablo’s Maddie Motts led early ahead of Brodie Garner of Oakley. Contact sent Chris Long of Antioch spinning in Turn 2 for a Lap 2 caution flag. Motts continued to lead Garner on the restart as Crandall settled into third. Crandall slipped past Garner for second on Lap 6 before a yellow flag waved for a Turn 2 tangle involving Long and Nicholas Garner. On the restart lap, Crandall moved past Motts for the lead with Jared Baugh of Pittsburg settling into third.
Recent Susanville winner Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez and Ryan Hart of Dos Palos brought out a Lap 12 yellow flag with Hart retiring from the race. Crandall led the restart with last row starter Hammett getting past Motts for second. The battle for the lead was intensifying, but Hammett spun in Turn 2 for a Lap 18 yellow flag. Crandall lad Ponciano and Motts on the restart, and they ran that way until Motts spun in Turn 2 for the final yellow flag on Lap 23. Crandall led Ponciano on the restart and they finished in that order with reigning champion Grayson Baca of Brentwood third ahead of DeCarlo and Matt Kile of San Jose.
Hunt Series star Josh Young of Roseville won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. Young led at the start, but he lost power and had to go to the back. Unfazed by that, Young methodically worked his way back to the front and scored the impressive victory.
Heat race winners Young and Shannon Newton of Elk Grove shared the front row, and Young took the early lead. Young lost power and stalled for a Lap 2 yellow flag. He was able to restart in the back as Newton took the lead ahead of Ryon Siverling of Concord and Dan Gonderman of Antioch. The lead trio pulled away from the pack, and Young already found his way back into the Top 5 by Lap 6. An inside move on the back stretch on Lap 9 put Siverling into the lead.
Young made a Turn 4 pass on Gonderman to take third on Lap 13 before a yellow flag waved. Siverling continued to set the pace on the restart as Young got past Newton. Young went low in Turn 4 of the 15th lap to take the lead from Siverling and pulled away from there. Siverling settled for second ahead of Newton, Gonderman and Steve Maionchi of Oakdale.
Mike Gillard of Atwater won the 20 lap Valley Sportsman/Hardtops Main Event. This was the first race of the season for the division and also the first race of a four-race series between Antioch and Merced that will as of now have a $1,200 point fund. Gillard is a two-time Merced Speedway Sportsman champion.
The crowd was treated early on to a thrilling three-car battle between Gillard, recent Merced Sportsman feature winner Tim Porter of Atwater and reigning champion Joel Hannagan of San Jose for the heat race victory. Hannagan won that race, but Gillard jumped into the early Main Event lead. Gary Hildebrand of Turlock spun and Turn 2 on Lap 2 but kept going. Porter was running a solid third as the lead duo pulled away. They caught slower traffic with five laps to go, and Gillard made a particularly good move exiting Turn 4 to put a little distance between himself and Hannagan. That made the difference as Gillard won ahead of Hannagan. Porter retired late as Damien Curl of Antioch finished third in front of Jeff Pike of Granite Bay and Don Slaney of Martinez.
Toby Brown of Pleasanton won the 15 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. Brown was making his second appearance of the season, and he also won the six lap heat race.
The Main Event ran without incident as Brown charged into the early lead ahead of new point leader Travis Day of Concord and David Hays of Brentwood. Rookie Trevor Day of Concord fell out early, and Brown scored the victory ahead of Travis Day and Hays.
Racing resumes next Saturday night with the Ken Graunstadt Memorial for the BCRA Midgets. The Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks will also be in action along with the Wingless Spec Sprints, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Dwarf Cars and BCRA Vintage Midgets.
