Richmond residents this fall will vote on their next mayor and it will likley be Councilmember Claudia Jimenez and Ahmad Anderson in the runoff.
Mayor Eduardo Martinez faced four challengers and he never recovered from online comments that led to calls for resignation and censorship– he ultimately avoided censure and agreed to restorative process.Martinez was challenged by Jimenez, Anderson, Demnlus Johnson III and Mark Wassberg.
As of 12:46 am Wednesday, results showed:
- 33.99% – Claudia Jimenez (3,648)
- 29.36% – Ahmad Anderson (3,068)
- 21.91% – Eduardo Martinez (2,303)
- 9.22% – Demnlus Johnson III (1,104)
- 5.51% – Mark Wassberg (590)
The city of Richmond moved to a primary as a way to break up the RPA (Richmond Progressive Alliance) dominance on the council — in fact, Jimenez and Martinez are both RPA members. Jimenez jumped into the race earning the RPA endorsement after Martinez made his comments on Bondi Beach mass shooting online.
Anderson meanwhile, has ran a solid campaign and has vowed to be “proactive” versus “reactive” and getting back to the community — in fact, this publication interviewed Anderson on our podcast in late April. He shared his vision for the City of Richmond and items he wants to work on.
