Antioch, CA — Connor Speir of Fillmore scored a thrilling victory in the 30 lap BCRA Midgets Super Series Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. It was the Ken Graunstadt Memorial race, and the win for Speir was worth $3,014. It was also his first win in the series.
Dane Culver of Riverside jumped into the early lead with Castro Valley’s Jake Andreotti quickly moving into second. Andreotti slipped past Culver in Turn 3 of the seventh lap to assume the lead with incoming point leader Caden Sarale of Stockton following into second. Unfortunately, Sarale suffered mechanical issues soon after and retired from the race. Nick Leonard Jr of San Jose hit the Turn 4 wall and lost a wheel for a Lap 13 red flag. Culver made a bid to regain the lead on the restart, but Andreotti remained in front.
Speir soon moved in to challenge Culver for second before making his move with an inside pass in Turn 3 on Lap 19. However, Andreotti ran comfortably in front until Isak Johnson of Roseville flipped in Turn 3 for a red flag on Lap 28. On the restart lap, Andreotti pushed in Turn 2, allowing Speir to slip underneath him for the lead. Andreotti tried to regain first in Turn 4, but Speir remained in command and collected the big victory. Andreotti settled for second ahead of Auburn’s Cody Gray, Lucas Hays of Dunnigan and WMR point leader Logan Mitchell of Santa Cruz.
Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez won an exciting 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. DeCarlo made a late move around leader Maddie Motts of San Pablo to score the well-earned victory. Two weeks ago, DeCarlo picked up a Main Event win in Susanville.
Oakley’s Charlie Bryant led the opening lap before Motts moved by on the outside in Turn 2 to take over. It was a close battle up front in the early laps with DeCarlo and Hunter Hammett of Oakley also in the mix. A yellow flag waved on Lap 7 for Gavin Griffiths of Brentwood. DeCarlo briefly got by Motts to lead the restart lap, but Motts made an outside pass at the line to regain the lead a lap later. Hammett made a Turn 2 pass to gain second on Lap 10 before another yellow flag waved.
Motts continued to lead Hammett and DeCarlo on the restart, and the leaders ran closely before another spin forced a Lap 16 yellow flag. Motts led the single file restart ahead of Hammett and DeCarlo, but DeCarlo went low in Turn 4 of the 17th lap to gain second. A Turn 4 pass on Lap 19 put DeCarlo into the lead, and Hammett and Motts tangled in Turn 4. DeCarlo went on to victory ahead of Bryant, point leader James Thomson of Pittsburg, Oakley’s Aidan Ponciano and Xavier Baez of Merced.
Dylan Shrum of Lincoln out-dueled his brother Brenden Shrum of Lincoln to win an exciting 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. Dylan had a close battle with Bay Point’s Danny Wagner earlier in the season before finishing second on that occasion. There were a season high 17 cars for this race.
Brenden Shrum jumped into the early lead in a race that was destined to go without a yellow flag. Dylan Shrum was an early second ahead of previous winner Toby Brown of Pleasanton. An inside pass on the frontstretch of the eighth lap gained Dylan Shrum the lead, and the leaders were already working their way through slower traffic. Wagner moved past Brown for third on Lap 11, and a low move in Turn 4 of the 15th lap gained Brenden Shrum the lead. However, Dylan Shrum went low in Turn 2 a lap later to regain first. Dylan Shrum would hold off Brenden Shrum for the hard fought victory as Wagner, Nick Velasquez of Camarillo and Brown completed the Top 5.
Roseville’s Josh Young won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. This was his second-straight victory as he tunes up for Cameron Martin Memorial race for the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Spec Sprint Series on June 20th.
After winning their heat races earlier in the evening, Young and Hunt Series point leader Anthony Bruno of San Jose settled into first and second at the start. Colin Kirby of Pleasant Hill ran third. Young began to put some distance between himself and Bruno, and Bruno’s race ended in a Turn 3 crash on Lap 11. Young led Kirby and Ryon Siverling of Concord on the restart, and they would finish in that order, followed by Steve Maionchi of Oakdale and Jeff Scotto of Brentwood.
Buddy Kniss of Oakley won the 20 lap Super Stock Main Event. For the Super Stocks, this was also the Larry Damitz Memorial race as they were unable to have it last week due to an event scheduled at Petaluma. Kniss was coming off of a huge victory in the IMCA Sport Modified show at Southern Oregon Speedway a week earlier.
Following his eight lap heat race victory, Matt Micheli of Live Oak jumped into the early lead ahead of Petaluma Shawn McCoy Memorial winner Mike Learn of Petaluma. It got a little too close between the lead duo on Lap 3 in Turn 3 with Micheli rolling. He was uninjured but out of the event. With Learn restarting at the back of the pack, Kniss led the restart ahead of Phil Marino of Chico. Learn quickly moved back into third. Kniss drove a flawless race and took the checkered flag ahead of Marino, Learn, Danville’s Jim Freethy and Randy Miramontez of Santa Rosa.
Tom Brown of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. Brown has had a string of second place finishes at Petaluma, but this was his second win in three starts at Antioch. It moved him into the point lead.
Brown had earlier won his heat race, and he immediately jumped into the Main Event lead, followed by Brandon Rogerson of Napa and Greg Fuss of Martinez. With Brown pulling away and Rogerson a comfortable second, there was a three-car battle for third. Haley Learn a Petaluma made a high pass in Turn 4 on Lap 7 to settle into third. However, Dustin Smith got by Learn to claim third for good with three laps to go. Brown won by a straightaway ahead of Rogerson as Smith, Learn and Fuss rounded out the Top 5.
Racing resumes next Saturday with Fan Appreciation Night. The IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars are back after a one-month absence along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks and 600 Micro Sprints.
