Antioch, CA — An exciting month of June continues at Antioch Speedway this Saturday night with a very special occasion. It’s the Fifth Annual Fan Appreciation Night in which the track and the racing community gives the fans a thank you for their support of the track, which is now and it’s 65th Anniversary season.
The ticket price for this event is $5 with all children four and under getting in for free. Not only will the fans be treated to a night of racing that will feature the three IMCA sanctioned divisions, Hobby Stocks and 600 Micro Sprints, there will all be several bikes given away to kids 12 and under and other goodies as well.
The event was instigated by Antioch Speedway Hall of Famer Ron Brown, who wanted to do something for the fans who support the race track. In his effort to get the ticket prices reduced for the night, Brown found that many within the racing community wanted to support what he was doing. Fan Appreciation Night has continued to grow each year.
It’s been over a month since the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars have been at Antioch Speedway. As the track has tried to keep these divisions off the schedule when other tracks are doing something, the options to book them have been few and far between. However, that’s going to change this month with all three divisions being featured on Saturday and also at the June 27th Soares Memorial race.
Seven-time reigning IMCA Modified champion Troy Foulger of Oakley has won both races this year. He currently leads fellow Oakley resident Andrew Pearce by just seven points in another close battle. Pearce, who has ranked no worse than third at Antioch over the last three seasons, is hoping to reach the Winner’s Circle after mechanical issues derailed a strong effort at the season opener.
Matt Kampfraat of Granite Bay had a second place finish at the season opener and currently ranks third in the standings by one point over Tyler Browne of Antioch. He has a two point advantage over Matt Micheli of Live Oak. Just three points out of third is reigning State champion Kate Robertson of Reno. Nevada. Saturday could be the Antioch debut of past Hobby Stock champion Cameron Swank of Antioch, who made his Modified debut at Petaluma last week.
The IMCA Sport Modified division this has six drivers within seven points of the lead after two events. Three-time champion and season opener winner of Fred Ryland of Brentwood leads reigning Merced Speedway champion Tanner Thomas of Atwater by two points. Thomas has a second and a third in his two Antioch visits. Five points out of the lead is three-time Antioch champion Trevor Clymens of Brentwood. Clymens could be debuting a new car at any time.
A month ago, reigning State champion Danny Wagner of Bay Point won his first Antioch Sport Modified Main Event. Wagner has won features in this class at several other venues including most recently at Watsonville, where he currently leads in a bid to repeat as champion there. He is six points out of the lead, while the tied Al Johnson of Antioch and Brentwood’s Jeff Bentancourt are seven points behind.
Following a second at Watsonville last week, Bentancourt is maintaining the State point lead this year. He had an Antioch best third place finish at the season opener. Currently, three-time runner-up Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley, reigning Marysville champion Mark Garner of Antioch, Alfred Johnson and James Graessle, both of Antioch, make up the balance of the Top 10 in the standings.
Things seem to be getting better and better for 2020 Antioch Hobby Stock champion James Thomson of Pittsburg in the title chase. Following his third place finish in the sixth event of the season last week, Thomson has increased his lead over the tied Hunter Hammett of Oakley and Jewell Crandall of Antioch by 48 points. Hammett got caught up in a tangle in Turn 4 with two laps to go last week.
The only driver close to Hammett and Crandall in the race for second is Oakley’s Aidan Ponciano, who is 12 points behind them. After winning the season opener, Ponciano has a fourth and a second in the last two races. Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez won a wild race last week in which Maddie Motts of San Pablo led most of the way.
Following his second place finish last week, Oakley’s Charlie Bryant moved into fifth in the standings by four points over Motts and 14 in front of Frank Furtado of Martinez. Rounding out the Top 10 going into Saturday are top rookie Nicholas Garner of Antioch, Brodie Garner of Oakley and Rick Rogers of San Pablo.
With wins in the two most recent races, Oakley’s Troy Foulger is currently leading the IMCA Stock Car battle by three points over season opener winner and reigning champion Fred Ryland of Brentwood. Not lost in the shuffle is Jason Robles of Rio Vista, who is only five points out of the lead in third. Robles has picked up a pair of second place finishes in his first three starts. His son Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista is currently fourth by one point over top division rookie Todd Gomez of Antioch and State point leader Justin Villanueva of Atwater.
Rounding out the field will be the 600 Micro Sprints in their third appearance of the season. Last time out, Oakley’s Devon Zuffa won the Main Event and followed it up with a second place finish in the recent Petaluma race. However, Zuffa is four points out of the lead at Petaluma and two behind San Jose’s Buddy Chappell at Antioch. Chappell won the Antioch season opener, which was his first win in the class.
Last season’s top rookie Aniyah Scott of Brentwood is third in the standings by two points over Antioch’s Charlie Kight. Top rookie Gabriel Monroy of Antioch is only six points behind Scott and two ahead of Fremont’s Ryan Dotson. Dotson is looking to improve upon his Antioch best fourth place finish this week.
Though Saturday night is sure to offer some exciting racing from the moment the green flag drops, it’s not just about that. It’s an opportunity for the fans to get a ticket to the show for just $5 and for kids to possibly win a bike or other goodies. For those curious about what the races are like on any given weekend, Saturday will be the night to come find out.
The gates will open at 4:00 with the first race starting at 6:00.
