Oakley Reminds Residents Fireworks are Illegal

The City of Oakley issued its annual reminder that all fireworks in the City of Oakley are illegal and cause a danger to the community.

This comes as Contra Costa County Fire Protection District told the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors they are worried about fire danger as alcohol and fireworks don’t mix and its anticipated to be a bad fire season given the weather patterns.

All FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL IN OAKLEY (and in all of Contra Costa County)

Fireworks easily ignite devastating fires, damaging property and threaten the lives of not only the person lighting them, but also neighbors, first responders, and animals. They cause serious injuries like burns, cuts, and even amputations, and they traumatize pets, livestock and some humans. The Oakley Municipal Code states that property owners, tenants or persons in immediate control of private property are held responsible for fireworks violations. Violations are subject to a fine of $1,000 per incident in Oakley.

In 2025, Oakley PD had 160 fireworks-related calls for service between June 1st and July 11th. That doesn’t even include the calls for the Contra Costa Fire Protection District for medical injuries or fires from fireworks! In 2025, $8,000 in fines were levied for confirmed evidence of illegal fireworks activity.

2026 Enforcement:

• Increased Patrols will target known high activity “hot spots.”
• Data-driven response — community reports — will be used for focused enforcement.
• Oakley PD will issue on-the-spot citations when violations are observed in person by an officer, and it is safe for the officer to do so.
• Response will continue to be a multi-agency effort between Oakley PD and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
• Oakley PD will use technology (drones) to strengthen response and provide evidence to issue citations via mail after footage is reviewed.
