On Friday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and CALFIRE battled a 54-acre vegetation fire in the City of Antioch.
According to preliminary reports, automatic gunfire or fireworks were heard shortly before the fire began around 9:20 pm Friday in the area of Deer Valley Road and Sand Creek, however, firefighters were able to make access to the fire near Deer Hill Road, just south of Kaiser.
Upon arrival, firefighters had eyes on the fire which was estimated to be 2-3 acres in the field. Due to wind and access issues, it was quickly upgraded to a 2-alarm fire with structure protection.
By 9:36 pm, the fire had grown to 10 acres and was stated to have a potential to reach 100 acres By 10:11 pm, it was estimated at 30-acres. By 11:00 pm, the fire was 100% contained.
In the end, CALFIRE said the fire was approximently 54 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
