Antioch, CA — Ryan McDaniel of Olivehurst won the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win was worth $1,000 for McDaniel as this was the 11th Annual Series Memorial race.
Heat race winner McDaniel charged into the lead at the green flag, followed by Oakley’s Andrew Pearce and Jonathan Hagio of Prunedale. The early battle was between Hagio, Friday night Watsonville winner Jim Pettit II of Prunedale and Salinas’s Cody Burke for third. Pettit finally made a low pass in Turn 4 of the 13th lap to claim the position with Burke moving into fourth a lap later. Justin Tudor of Grass Valley brought out a yellow flag moments later.
McDaniel continued to lead Pearce and Pettit on the restart, and the yellow flag waved on Lap 18 for a Kate Robertson of Reno, Nevada spin. McDaniel maintained his lead over Pearce when the green flag waved, but a yellow flag for Tudor set up a one lap shootout to the finish. Undaunted, McDaniel charged into lead on the final restart and held off Pearce for the victory. Exiting the final turn, Pettit pushed high, allowing Burke to race by for third. Pettit settled for fourth ahead of Hagio.
Grayson Baca of Brentwood won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. After nearly winning the previous race, the two-time reigning champion led all the way to become the sixth different winner in the eight races held so far.
Baca raced into the early lead ahead of fellow heat race winner Aidan Ponciano of Oakley. A yellow flag waved on Lap 2 for a tangle involving Dennnis Gilcrease of Antioch and Brentwood’s Jessie Paladino. Baca continued to lead Ponciano and Charlie Bryant of Oakley on the restart. A low pass in Turn 2 gained Jared Baugh of Pittsburg third on Lap 4, and a yellow flag waved moments later for Hunter Hammett of Oakley.
Baca continued to lead the way on the restart, and a low pass in Turn 4 of the seventh lap gained Baugh second from Ponciano. Nicky Skidmore of Benicia brought out a Lap 13 yellow flag. Jewell Crandall of Antioch moved into third behind Baca and Baugh on the restart. Baca held off Baugh through one more restart and would lead him across the finish line. Crandall settled for third ahead of Ponciano, while Hammett moved into fifth on the final lap.
Fred Ryland of Brentwood assumed the point lead in the IMCA Stock Car division by winning his second 15 lap Main Event. A post race disqualification in tech saw apparent winner Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley lose the IMCA Sport Modified 20 lap feature win with Ryland ending up the winner of that race. The win was the second for Ryland and kept him in the lead in that championship battle as well.
In the Sport Modified Main Event, Mark Garner of Antioch set the early pace ahead of Ryan and Cameron Swank of Antioch. A yellow flag waved on Lap 3 for James Graessle of Antioch. Garner led Ryan on the restart, but a high pass in Turn 4 of the fifth lap gained Ryan the lead. A yellow flag waved for Garner in Turn 2 on Lap 7, and Ryan led Danny Wagner of Bay Point and Trevor Clymens of Brentwood on the ensuing restart.
Ryland slipped past Clymens for third a lap later, and an inside pass on the front stretch on Lap 10 moved Ryland into second. There was just one yellow flag slowdown during the second half of the race, and Ryan took the checkered flag ahead of Ryland. Following Ryan’s disqualification in tech, Ryland got the win ahead of Wagner, Jason Clayton Jr of Yuba City, Garner and Antioch’s Al Johnson.
Ryland won the IMCA Stock Car heat race and took the Main Event lead at the start ahead of Anthony Giuliani of Morgan Hill and San Francisco’s Dave Hill. A low move in Turn 4 of the third lap gained Robles third, and he started challenging Giuliani for second. Robles finally grabbed the spot with an inside pass on the frontstretch of the ninth lap. However, Ryland had a big lead by then. Ryland won ahead of Robles and Hill.
Danny Wagner of Bay Point won his fifth Dwarf Car Main Event of the season. This moved the three-time division champion into the lead in the standings.
Wagner had earlier won the heat race, and he jumped into the early Main Event lead ahead of Brentwood’s David Hays and incoming point leader Travis Day of Concord. Toby Brown of Pleasanton went low in Turn 4 of the fourth lap to take third from Day. Brown made an inside pass in Turn 4 of the seventh lap to claim second from Hays. Brandon Aylesworth of Suisun City passed Day on the inside in Turn 4 of the 13th lap to take fourth, and Wagner won ahead of Brown, Hays, Aylesworth and Day.
Jim Freethy of Danville won the 15 lap Super Stock Main Event. This was the 26th career win in this division for the three-time champion.
Freethy and reigning Antioch and Petaluma champion Mike Learn of Petaluma shared the front row for the Main Event. Learn had earlier won the heat race. Freethy bolted into the lead at the start with Learn taking up pursuit. However, Freethy ran fast and consistent laps to score the victory ahead of Learn and Joey Ridgeway of Brentwood.
The speedway will take a two week break, but racing will resume on July 18th. The IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars will be back in action along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks, BCRA Lightning Sprints and 600 Micro Sprints.
