On Thursday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to two hazmat incidents just hours apart in East Contra Costa County — the first being in the City of Brentwood, the second in the City of Oakley.
Here is what Contra Costa County Fire released on both incidents:
Propane Leak in Brentwood
Just after 11:00 a.m., Contra Costa Fire responded to a business parking lot in Brentwood after receiving reports of a leaking propane cylinder in the bed of a pickup truck. The incident involved a 25-gallon propane tank with a small leak that could not be safely stopped.
Firefighters secured the area, and requested the Hazardous Materials Team to safely evaluate and mitigate the leak. Crews conducted a controlled flaring operation to safely burn off the leaking propane, eliminating the hazard in a controlled manner. No injuries were reported.
HazMat Investigation in Oakley
Just after 12:25 p.m., Contra Costa Fire responded to a veterinary facility for a reported medical emergency involving a person who had a seizure. While crews were responding, additional reports of employees experiencing dizziness raised concerns about a possible hazardous materials incident.
Crews made entry into the building and monitors indicated a possible substance in the air. The building was evacuated.
Hazardous materials technicians conducted further atmospheric monitoring to identify any potential hazardous substance or product release. After a thorough investigation, crews found no hazardous product release. The cause of the employees’ reported medical symptoms remains undetermined.
A total of two patients were transported. No hazardous materials were found, and there was no threat to the surrounding community.
