WALNUT CREEK, Calif. –– Lindsay Wildlife Experience, the East Bay nonprofit native wildlife museum and hospital, today celebrated the 52nd birthday of the oldest known living turkey vulture in the world, Lord Richard.
The festivities included special programming and presentations for visitors centered around Lord Richard, including the unveiling of a birthday “cake” made from some of his favorite treats, such as watermelon, pieces of raw meat, and superworms. The celebration even included a live performance by Bay Area band, The Corner Laughers of their original song, “Lord Richard”, written as a tribute to the iconic bird.
“It’s so incredible that we are able to celebrate this important milestone for the much beloved Lord Richard,” said Lauren Amy, Curator of Animal Encounters. “Lord Richard is a local legend that we look forward to having to continue to serve as an animal ambassador for many more years to come.”
Lord Richard hatched in 1974 in San Francisco. Because wildlife rehabilitation was still in its infancy at the time, he became habituated to the humans who raised him. Once it was determined that he could not survive in the wild, Lord Richard joined Lindsay Wildlife Experience as an ambassador for his species.
The Bay Area landmark is also inviting anyone with an upcoming birthday to share in the festivities with their special Birthday Party Packages.
