A farmers market could be coming to the City of Pittsburg beginning in August.
The item will go before the Pittsburg City Council on July 20 and if approved, Your Community Farmers Advocate (“Licensee”) to operate a weekly farmers’ market on the City Hall Lawn at 65 Civic Avenue, beginning August 1, 2026–the applicant is John Gallardo. The Agreement authorizes use of the lawn area on the north side of City Hall each Wednesday for a Certified Farmers’ Market offering fresh local produce, small-batch prepared foods, and other artisanal goods.
Under the proposed Agreement, the Licensee will pay the City a license fee of $3.00 per vendor per market day, payable monthly. In addition, the Licensee will provide a $1,000 security deposit to secure performance of its obligations and cover any damage(s) to City property.
According to the city, in the past, Pittsburg hosted a farmers’ market in Old Town, however, it has not operated for nearly 10-years. Pittsburg claims the interest in reestablishing a local market has remained strong.
Rather than hosting the market in the downtown, the city says it identified the lawn area north of City Hall as appropriate for a new community farmers’ market. The site is centrally located, highly visible, accessible to the public via multiple modes of transportation, and well suited to serve as a civic gathering space. Hosting the market at City Hall would not only increase access to fresh food, but also help activate a prominent public space in the heart of the community.
Under the proposed Agreement, Licensee would operate and oversee a weekly Certified Farmers’ Market in Pittsburg in accordance with California law governing certified agricultural markets. The market would operate each Wednesday, with vendor setup occurring between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., public market hours from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and cleanup completed by 3:00 p.m.
