Antioch, CA — Jacob Tuttle of Oakley won the 25 lap Hunt Magnetos Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. Tuttle led all but the opening lap in his winning effort aboard the Dolner Motorsports entry. After posting seven Top 3 finishes on the circuit, this was his first win of the season.

It was also the annual Back To School Backpack Night. Several Hunt Series racers met with young fans during intermission and gave them backpacks full of school supplies. The track also gave away a few bikes to the young fans.

Jimmy Christian of Morgan Hill led the opening lap before Tuttle made a move in Turn 2 to take the lead. An Inside pass on the front stretch on Lap 3 gained Joshua Wooten of Yuba City second with Nathan Schank of Phoenix, Arizona making an inside pass on Christian for third. The race had a series of yellow flags on Lap 6 for various incidents that would eliminate incoming point leader Anthony Bruno of San Jose, championship hopeful Matthew Kaiser of Napa and Shawn Arriaga of Antioch from the action.

When the race got going again, Tuttle led Wooten and Schank. Schank was challenging Wooten for second before making a back stretch pass on Lap 11 to claim the position. Tuttle had built a straightaway advantage by then. He caught traffic in the waning laps but still had a good advantage over Schank in victory. Wooten settled for third with Braidon Moniz of Waianae, Hawaii and Christian rounding out the lead lap finishers in the Top 5.

Aidan Ponciano of Oakley won the 15 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. This was his second win of the season and division-leading eighth Top 5 finish as he remains in championship contention entering the crucial month of August.

Coming into the evening on a two-race winning streak, Brentwood’s Grayson Baca set the early pace ahead of Ponciano and Petaluma point leader Colten Haney of Brentwood. An inside pass on the front stretch on Lap 3 gained Hunter Hammett of Oakley third, and a yellow flag slowed the action a lap later. Baca continued to lead Ponciano on the restart, but a yellow flag waved a lap later when contact sent incoming point leader James Thomson of Pittsburg spinning in Turn 3. Baca led Ponciano on the restart with Jewell Crandall of Antioch slipping past Hammett for third.

A yellow flag waved on Lap 7 for Nicholas Garner of Antioch. On the restart, Ponciano got a good run on the inside and emerged out of Turn  2 with the lead. Hammett was back in third at that point, and the yellow flag waved on Lap 11 for Mya Jones of Martinez. The time limit was fast approaching when the yellow flag waved for Garner in Turn 1 on Lap 12. Thomson spun in Turn 4 for a Lap 15 yellow flag. Ponciano led what would be the final restart, but the yellow flag waved when Thomson stalled on the front straightaway. The race was called at that point with Ponciano winning ahead of Baca, new point leader Hammett, Crandall and Josh Appelbaum of Antioch.

Danny Wagner of Bay Point won the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. This was the sixth win of the season for the current point leader. Wagner also won his eight lap heat race.

Following a restart when Tommie Piantanida of Discovery Bay spun on the front stretch, Wagner led heat winner David Hays of Brentwood. A yellow flag waved after one lap after a tangle between Cameron Squatritto of Gilroy and Pete Piantanida of Discovery Bay. Wagner led Haye and reigning champion Travis Day of Concord. A yellow flag waved on Lap 4, and Wagner led Day and Hays on the restart. Pete Piantanida made an inside pass on the front stretch on Lap 7 to take third from Hays, only to surrender the position to Squatritto a lap later.

The three-car battle for third saw Hays regain the position on Lap 9. When Day pushed high exiting Turn 4 on Lap 10, Hays moved back into second. Hays lifted to avoid contact with Wagner as they headed down the backstretch on Lap 13, resulting in a tangle between Pete PIantanida and Hays for the final yellow flag. Wagner led the restart and went on to victory ahead of Day, Hays, Pete Piantanida and newcomer Andrew Krey of Discovery Bay.

Joel Hannagan won the 20 lap Hardtop/Sportsman Main Event. This was the second win of the season for Hannagan aboard Doug Braudrick’s Junkyard Dog Hardtop.

Hannagan led from the outset ahead of heat race winner Mike Gillard of Atwater. Brett Barstow of Ballico was an early third before surrendering the position to Tim Porter of Atwater on Lap 3. Hannagan held a huge advantage over Gillard at the checkered flag with Porter, Damien Curl of Antioch and Barstow rounding out the Top 5.

David Dupuis of Union City won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. It was his first win after recording several Top 5 feature finishes at various venues during the past two seasons.

Incoming point leader Tom Brown of Santa Rosa took the early lead ahead of heat race winner Brandon Rogerson of Napa. The duo began to pull away from the field with Dupuis running a comfortable third. During the final few laps, Brown appeared to be losing power as Rogerson moved in for a challenge. The two drivers were headed for the checkered flag, but contact in Turn 4 saw both of them spin.

The race had a one lap shootout with Dupuis the new leader over Ryder Holmen of Antioch and Brown. Dupluis pulled ahead as Rogerson looked for a way around Holmen. Rogerson would make the pass, but he ran out of time as Dupuis went on to score the popular victory. Brown settled for third ahead of Holmen.

Racing continues next Saturday night with the IMCA sanctioned Sport Modifieds, Modifieds and Stock Cars back in action along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks and 600 Micro Sprints.
