Martinez, CA – Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS) is asking the community to help relieve overcrowding at the shelter by adopting a pet, with a particular need for cat and kitten adoptions.
Summer is historically one of the busiest times of the year for CCAS. The shelter experiences its highest levels of stray animal intake during the summer months, and the annual influx of litters of kittens—commonly known as “kitten season”—adds even more pressure on shelter capacity. As a result, the shelter is currently full and is looking to the community for help.
“Every adoption creates space for another animal in need,” said Contra Costa Animal Services Director Ben Winkleblack. “Right now, our shelter is caring for more animals than we have room for, especially cats and kittens. If you’ve been thinking about adding a pet to your family, there has never been a better time. By adopting, you’re not only giving one animal a second chance—you’re helping us make room to care for the next animal that comes through our doors.
To help more animals find loving homes, all adoption fees are currently waived, although a $25 dog licensing fee may apply for Contra Costa County residents where required. For those want to help but are unable to adopt a pet at this time, CCAS also has temporary foster pet opportunities available.
All adopted animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going home, providing families with an excellent start as they welcome a new companion.
CCAS currently has over 150 pets seeking permanent or temporary homes. Interested adopters and fosters can view CCAS’s available pets at www.ccasd.org, or come to meet them at the CCAS adoption center in Martinez.
