Antioch, CA — Andrew Pearce of Oakley won the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win was worth $1,000 to Pearce, who had finished second in the Soares Memorial Main Event in June. This was his first win of the season.
After winning the eight lap heat race, Pearce drew a front row start for the Main Event and took the early lead. Tyler Browne of Antioch took second from Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas on Lap 2. Pearce had a half-straightaway lead by the fifth lap. Hogge started challenging Browne for second on Lap 15 and made an inside pass on the 18th lap to grab the position. Browne fell off the pace moments later, and Troy Foulger of Oakley got a flat tire as the yellow flag waved. This set up a two-lap sprint to the finish. However, Pearce maintained his advantage when the green flag waved and went on to victory ahead of Hogge, Foulger, Browne and Jim Pettit II of Prunedale.
Following a crash that took out the leaders, Aidan Ponciano of Oakley grabbed the lead and went on to his second-straight Pacific Coast Hobby Stock 20 lap Main Event victory. It was also the third win of the season for the championship contender and came after he won the $250 Dash For Cash, sponsored by 1-Tom-Plumbing of Concord.
Heat race winners Josh Appelbaum of Antioch and Charlie Bryant of Oakley had the front row for the Main Event. Bryant sprinted into the lead ahead of Appelbaum and San Pablo’s Maddie Motts. James Thomson of Pittsburg slipped past Motts for third on Lap 5 and made an outside pass on the frontstretch two laps later to take second from Appelbaum. Thomson quickly reeled in Bryant and made a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 12 to grab the lead.
Moments later, the leaders caught Caiden Robles of Rio Vista to put him a lap down. Thomson got into Robles in Turn 4, causing Robles to get sideways and clip the right rear tire of Bryant. Moments later, Motts slammed into Robles on the front straightaway, and the red flag waved. Fortunately, nobody was injured. Motts, Robles and Thomson were eliminated from the contest, and Bryant changed a flat tire and returned for the restart.
Appelbaum had the lead on the restart, but Ponciano raced into the lead when the green flag flew. Point leader Hunter Hammett of Oakley took third from Jewell Crandall of Antioch on Lap 18 and made an inside pass on the backstretch on Lap 19 to take second from Appelbaum. Ponciano won the race by a straightaway. Hammett crossed the line in second but was penalized one position, giving Appelbaum second ahead of Hammett, Crandall and Bryant.
Grabbing the lead from Trevor Clymens, fellow Brentwood resident Fred Ryland went on to win the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. This was the third win of the season for Ryland, who is leading the standings in a bid for his fourth Sport Modified championship.
Eight lap heat race winner and State point leader Jeff Bentancourt of Brentwood had a front row start and took the early lead with Clymens moving into second a lap later. Bay Point’s Danny Wagner followed Clymens into third. A low move in Turn 2 of the fourth lap put Clymens into the lead. Trent Golden of Pittsburg spun in Turn 2 for a Lap 4 yellow flag. Clymens led Bentancourt and Wagner on the restart.
Wagner made a low pass in Turn 2 of the seventh lap to take second from Bentancourt with Ryland making a move in Turn 4 to settle into third. The yellow flag waved moments later for Golden. Clymens led the restart with Ryland making a low move in Turn 2 around Wagner for second.
Ryland closed in on Clymens and used the inside line in Turn 4 on Lap 11 to take the lead. As Ryland pulled away, Wagner made an inside pass in Turn 4 on Lap 13 to grab second. Ryland went on to victory ahead of Wagner, Clymens, Al Johnson of Antioch and Bentancourt.
Oakley’s Troy Foulger won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. This was the third win of the year in this class for Foulger, who earlier won his heat race.
Foulger charged into the lead at the start. State point leader Justin Villanueva of Atwater was an early second, but an inside pass in Turn 4 of the third lap gained Jason Robles of Rio Vista the position. Nick Friend of Galt spun in Turn 4 for a Lap 6 yellow flag. Foulger continued to lead Jason Robles on the restart. Robles slowed from second and headed for the pits. Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista was in third at that point, but he slowed with a flat for a Lap 10 yellow flag.
Foulger led Justin Villanueva and point leader Fred Ryland of Brentwood on the restart. Foulger’s motor began overheating in the waning laps, but he held off a late surge from Justin Villanueva for the victory. Ryland settled for third ahead of Mike Villanueva of Atwater and Friend.
Oakley’s Devon Zuffa won the 12 lap 600 Micro Sprint Main Event. Zuffa had won the heat race earlier in the evening, and this was the second win of the season for the current point leader.
Zuffa bolted into the lead at the start of the Main Event, followed by Buddy Chappell of San Jose and Aniyah Scott of Brentwood. A high move in Turn 4 of the third lap gained Matthew Linde of Pittsburg the third position. Linde made an outside pass in Turn 4 of the seventh lap to grab second from Chappell. However, Zuffa held a commanding lead at the checkered flag. Linde finished second, and Scott made a low pass in Turn 4 on Chappell on Lap 11 to grab third.
Racing resumes next Saturday night with the 5th Annual Dean Cline Classic for the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks. The IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars return along with the Dwarf Cars.
