On July 30, the City of Pittsburg held its virtual community engagement workshop about its data center development. The meeting was 5 hours and 36 minutes.
In addition to the Workshop, the City has updated the Data Center project webpage and is considering ongoing community engagement to ensure the public is informed on data center projects and impacts in Pittsburg.
“It’s clear from tonight’s turnout that so many of us care deeply about tonight’s topic. Over the past several weeks, I’ve heard directly from many of you,” said Mayor Dionne Adams who noted she would be recusing herself from the item due to legal advice she received. “Whether you support or have concerns about this project, what I have heard most constantly is that people want more information, more transparency and an opportunity to ask questions. And I agree.”
She said she asked for the meeting solely on the data center so the community could hear directly from city staff and how they arrived at this point, how decisions were made, learn what decisions are made and what decisions remain.
“Moving forward, I’ve asked the city to strengthen its community outreach on this and other issues,” said Adams.
The 300,000 square-foot data center is set to be located on the old Delta View Golf Course site which has been labeled a “technology center” after the golf course closed in 2018. Fast forward to November 2024, the council unanimously approved the data center.
There will be an update to the City Council during the regular City Council meeting on Monday, August 3.
Note – Mayor Adams recused herself after obtaining an advice letter in February from the FPPC to determine if she could participate in the interconnection agreement between the Pittsburg Power Company and PG&E where it would be brought to the PPC board for approval. She serves on both he city council and the PPC board while being an employee of PG&E. The FPPC concluded it would need to recuse herself from the interconnection item. This includes recusal from study session, data center, policy discussion, AVAIO project and direction to staff.
