On Friday, Contra Costa County moved one step closer to knowing what the November ballot will look like as the candidate filing deadline came and went.
A review of candidate filings shows several races are not quite settled yet. Filing deadlines will be extended into next week in races where an eligible incumbent opted not to seek re-election.
Those extended filing periods include:
- City of Brentwood – Both City Council seats
- City of Clayton
- City of Concord – District 3
- Town of Danville
- City of Pittsburg
- City of Walnut Creek
Meanwhile, several other races appear to be over before they ever really started.
With no challengers stepping forward by Friday’s deadline, several incumbents are currently unopposed and, barring any change in their qualification status, are positioned for another four years of service without having to face an opponent.
Those races include:
- Mayor of Martinez
- City of Martinez – Council District 4
- City of Oakley
Meanwhile, several races in the school districts and special district also received a “free ride” to election with no opponent (see full list below)
So while much of the November ballot is beginning to take shape, candidate season isn’t quite finished. Several races will remain open into next week, while others essentially ended at the filing deadline due to a lack of opposition.
NOTE: Candidates who pulled papers and are qualified have a “q” next to them. Some candidates who have pulled but did not filed have been removed. Many are still pending.
