On August 7, 2026 at 12:44PM, Oakley police officers were dispatched to the 4000 block of Mellowood Drive for the report of a military style grenade being found in a garage.
The person who found it was cleaning out his parents’ home and had no previous knowledge of the device being there.
Oakley called the Walnut Creek Police Department bomb squad and they responded to the scene. Upon their cursory inspection, the device appeared to be inert, but due to it being a military device, it was suggested to also have a bomb squad from Travis Air Force Base respond.
The TAFB bomb squad arrived and confirmed the device was inert; they collected it and took it away for proper disposal.
