Antioch, CA — Hunter Hammett of Oakley won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the fourth win of the season for Hammett who maintains a 20 point lead over Jewell Crandall of Antioch in the championship battle.
The heat race winners ended up starting in the first three spots with Hammett on the front row outside next to reigning champion Grayson Baca of Brentwood. Baca set the early pace ahead of Hammett and Crandall. A yellow flag waved on Lap 5, and Baca continued to lead Hammett. Maddie Motts of San Pablo made a Turn 2 pass on Crandall for second, but Crandall went low in Turn 4 a lap later to reclaim third. A yellow flag waved moments later for Nicky Skidmore of Benicia on the frontstretch.
Baca chose the outside for the restart, but Hammett charged into the lead. Motts made a low pass in Turn 4 to move into second with Crandall back in third a lap later. Baca pulled into the infield on Lap 11. Frank Furtado of Martinez spun in Turn 4, collecting Skidmore. Hammett continued to lead Motts on the restart. James Thomson of Pittsburg was third at that point and went low in Turn 2 a lap later to claim second. Hammett went on to victory ahead of Thomson, Crandall and Aidan Ponciano of Oakley. Charlie Bryant of Oakley made a last lap pass on Motts to finish fifth.
Caden Sarale of Stockton won the 25 lap BCRA/WMR Midgets California Super Series Main Event. This was the fourth win of the season for Sarale. He finds himself chasing Logan Mitchell of Santa Cruz in the championship race after missing last week’s event at Petaluma to go to Santa Maria, where he won the USCS Sprint Car race.
The Main Event had to be restarted after a Turn 2 tangle involving Glenn Bryan of Capitola and Santa Rosa’s Jason McIntosh. Both drivers were eliminated, and Cody Gray of Auburn led the restart ahead of Sarale and Dane Culver of Riverside. Sarale made a low pass in Turn 3 of the third lap to grab second. As Sarale pulled away to a big advantage, Gray and Culver had a closer battle for second. Fifth place Nicholas Leonard Jr of San Jose was lapped on Lap 15, and the final yellow flag waved for Dalton Wright of Lodi on Lap 21. Sarale led the restart and brought it home to victory ahead of Gray, Culver, Mitchell and Leonard.
Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley scored the victory in the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. This was his first win of the season after a post race disqualification cost him a win earlier in the season. The three-time runner-up in points is also a new father, and he celebrated his victory with wife Jayleen and their new baby boy in the winner’s circle.
Current IMCA State point leader Jeff Bentancourt of Brentwood collected his third-straight heat race win earlier in the evening and bolted into the lead at the start of the Main Event. Ryan was second ahead of point leader Fred Ryland of Brentwood. The yellow flag waved for Kelly Campanile of Oakley on Lap 3. Ryan took the lead from Bentancourt on the restart with Ryland and Al Johnson of Antioch shuffling him out of the Top 3 by the completion of the lap. An inside pass on the frontstretch gained Danny Wagner of Bay Point third on Lap 5. A yellow flag waved for Brentwood’s Trevor Clymens in Turn 2 on Lap 8. Ryan continued to lead Ryland and Wagner on the restart. With Ryland providing serious pressure in the waning laps, Ryan was still able to grab the checkered flag in first. Wagner settled for third ahead of Johnson and Clymens.
Fred Ryland won the 15 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. It was his fourth win of the season as he closes in on his second-straight division championship.
Jason Robles of Rio Vista took the early lead ahead of Dave Hill of San Francisco. Ryland gained second when Hill spun in Turn 1 on Lap 2, and a high move in Turn 4 of the third lap put Ryland into the lead. Robles slowed for a yellow flag on Lap 7. With Robles on the sidelined, Ryland led the rest of the way with Hill finishing second.
Joel Hannagan of San Jose won the 15 lap Valley Sportsman/Hardtop Main Event. This was his third-straight win. With the heat race win earlier in the evening, Hannagan increased his point advantage over Mike Gillard of Atwater. This was also their Bill Bowers Memorial race as they weren’t able to be rescheduled with the other divisions on September 26th. Trophies were sponsored by MTZ Automotive.
Hannigan took the lead at the start with Gillard running closely in second. Atwater’s Tim Porter was an early third with Damien Curl of Antioch running closely behind him. There were two battles on the track from the start, and Curl made a Turn 4 pass on Lap 11 to take third from Porter. Gillard continued to make attempts to get underneath Hannagan for the lead, but Hannagan kept him at bay. Hannagan took the checkered flag ahead of Gillard, Curl and Porter.
Tom Brown of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. This was his third win of the season as he added to his point lead in his bid to repeat as champion.
Brown jumped ahead at the start, followed by rookie Brandon Rogerson of Napa and Ryder Holmen of Antioch. Rogerson got out of shape exiting Turn 2 on Lap 3, allowing Holmen and Matt Wirth of Oakland to close in on him. In his effort to challenge Rogerson, Holmen got out of shape in Turn 2 on Lap 7. This enabled Rogerson to put some distance between the two. Brown built a huge advantage by the time the checkered flag flew with Rogerson finishing second ahead of Holmen and Wirth.
Racing resumes next Saturday night. It’s the Eighth Annual Hall of Fame Night. The IMCA Modifieds will be having their Championship Night. The Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks will be in action along with the IMCA sanctioned Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars and Xtreme Late Models.
