Christian Wins Panfili Cup, Ryland Grabs Two Championships, Crandall And Scott Win at Antioch Speedway

Antioch CA — Jimmy Christian of Morgan Hill won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the Fourth Annual Panfili Cup race in honor of Hall of Famer Rick Panfili, and Christian became the fourth different winner. He is currently fifth in points with the Hunt Series this year and a two-time Spec Sprint champion at Watsonville Speedway.

Winged 360 Sprint Car star Jake Haulot of Cotati was a heat race winner earlier in the evening and took the early lead ahead of Ryon Siverling of Concord and Christian. A yellow flag waved on Lap 2 for heat race winner Shannon Newton of Elk Grove. Haulot continued to lead the restart with Christian making a low move in Turn 2 to take second from Siverling. Hunt Series star Josh Wooten of Yuba City made this a close four-car battle up front before Christian made a high pass in Turn 2 of the eighth lap to take the lead..

Siverling went low in Turn 2 on Lap 9 to take second from Haulot. The second place battle was in heavy traffic when Haulot got back around Siverling for second on Lap 16. At that point, Christian held a sizable lead and took the checkered flag ahead of Haulot, Siverling, Wooten and Kevin Box of Oakley.

Fred Ryland of Brentwood had a big night as he won both the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified and IMCA Stock Car Main Events. In each division, it was his fifth win of the season and capped championship efforts for him in both classes.

In the Sport Modified race, championship hopeful Danny Wagner of Bay Point had earlier won the eight lap heat race. With a front row start next to Ryland, Wagner bolted into the lead at the start. Trevor Clymens of Brentwood was an early third. Wagner seemed to have the race well in hand when he caught a slower car on Lap 14. A lap later, Wagner and the slower car made contact in Turn 2, allowing Ryland to make a move underneath both to grab the lead. Ryland led the rest of the way to win ahead of Wagner, Clymens, Al Johnson of Antioch and Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley.

Ryland started his Stock Car night off with a heat race win and chased Jason Robles of Rio Vista for one lap in the Main Event. A low pass in Turn 2 of the second lap gained Ryland the lead. At that point, Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista had settled into third. Ryland led the rest of the way to win ahead of Jason Robles, Kenneth Robles, Dave Hill of San Francisco and Anthony Slaney of Martinez.

Jewell Crandall of Antioch won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. Crandall had to deal with several challenges throughout the race before posting her second feature triumph of the year. Combined with her eight lap heat race win, Crandall cut Hunter Hammett of Oakley’s lead to 16 points with three races remaining.

Crandall shared the front row of the Main Event with Josh Appelbaum Antioch, and Crandall charged into the lead at the start, followed by Rick Rogers of San Pablo and Petaluma point leader Colten Haney of Brentwood. James Thomson of Pittsburgh went high in Turn 4 on Lap 3 to claim third with Hammett quickly moving into fourth. A yellow flag waved on Lap 5 for Maddie Motts of San Pablo on the backstretch. Crandall continued to lead Rogers on the restart with Hammett getting around Thomson for third.

A high move in Turn 4 of the ninth lap put Hammett into second, but Rogers came back strong on the inside in Turn 2 a lap later to reclaim the position. Contact sent Aidan Ponciano of Oakley spinning in Turn 2 for a Lap 12 yellow flag. Crandall chose the outside on the restart, and Thomson immediately followed her into second when the green flag waved. Thomson had momentum and appeared to make a pass in Turn 2, only for a yellow flag to wave moments later for Nicholas Garner of Antioch in Turn 1. Crandall led the next restart attempt with Thomson moving past Rogers for second. Haney saw his Top 5 run end for a Lap 13 yellow flag.

Track officials elected to go single file for the remaining restarts, and Crandall led Thomson and Rogers when the green flag waved. Thomson was making a strong bid to grab the lead on the outside, but the intense battle up front saw Thomson spinning at the Turn 1 exit for the final yellow flag on Lap 15. Crandall led Rogers and Hammett on the restart. A low move in Turn 4 of the 18th lap gained Hammett second. Hammett went low in Turn 3 on the final lap to get past Crandall. However, Crandall went low in Turn 4 and would beat Hammett back to the checkered flag for the hard fought victory. Rogers settled for third ahead of Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez at Jesse Paladino of Brentwood.

Aniyah Scott of Brentwood scored a popular 15 lap 600 Micro Sprint Main Event victory. The crowd roared their approval for Scott, who earned her first feature win after earlier winning the eight lap heat race. Scott remains within 24 points of the lead in a close championship battle and is only two points out of second.

Scott bolted into the lead at the start ahead of Buddy Chappell of San Jose and point leader Devon Zuffa of Oakley. Zuffa attempted to get around Chappell in Turn to on Lap 6 and lost a little ground in the process. Chappell continued to look for a way around Scott, but she ran strong in the lead before the only yellow flag waved on Lap 9 for debris on the track. Scott led Chapell and Zuffa on the restart. Despite pressure from Chappell, Scott kept her cool and earned her very first feature win ahead of Chappell, Zuffa and rookie Gabriel Monroy of Antioch.

Greg Dennett of Livermore won the 15 lap BCRA Lightning Sprint Main Event. This was his third win of the season, which should enable him to cut some points off of the nine point advantage Matt Land of Elk Grove carried into the evening.

Before the race even got started, mechanical issues would sideline heat race winner Jason Schostag of Hangtown and Hunter Kinney of Citrus Heights. Dennett bolted into the lead at the start ahead of Land and Justin Norton of Ceres, and they would finish in that order at the checkered flag.

Racing takes a break for a week, but September 12th will see the NARC King of the West Winged 410 Sprint Cars make their only appearance of the season, joined by the Dwarf Cars and 600 Micro Sprints.
