2 Dead in 2-Alarm Townhome Fire in Walnut Creek

Two people died and a third person was injured when a 2-alarm fire struck at 6:30 am Monday in the City of Walnut Creek.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to the 1900 block of Countrywood Ct as a fire was reported at a townhouse. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature with the area of origin being a first floor bedroom. The ignition source was believed to be smoking materials which CONFIRE says an oxygen machine contributed to rapid fire spread.

Officials said an elderly female and adult son on 2nd floor died in blaze as did a small dog. The third victim escaped the fire and ultimately three units burned.

The fire remains under investigation and CONFIRE has advises folks to avoid the area for the time being.

The American Red Cross is assisting at least two families and the person who escaped the fire.
