Crockett: Man Ejected From Vehicle Dies After Brief Pursuit

The Contra Costa County Sheriffs office confirmed a man died near Crockett after a brief pursuit that resulted in a crash with an ejection.

Here is what the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office Release said:

On Monday morning at about 1:23 am, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen vehicle in the area of eastbound I-80 and Willow Avenue. Deputy Sheriffs located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop. The suspect did not yield, leading deputies on a brief pursuit that was terminated shortly after losing sight of the car.

Several minutes later, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle crash on Cummings Skyway. The solo car was then located in a ravine.

The driver was ejected from the car and deceased on scene. He is not being identified at this time.

Per the countywide law enforcement involved fatal incident protocol, this incident is being investigated by the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office and the Contra Costa DA’s Office.

CHP Release: Solo vehicle fatal crash on Cummings Skyway near Crockett

Today (10/30/23) at about 1:24am, CHP Contra Costa was notified the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle (Blue KIA Optima) and traveling on eastbound I-80. CCSO discontinued the pursuit as the vehicle exited to Cummings Skyway and continued at a high rate of speed. At 1:27am, CHP dispatch received a crash notification in the area of Cummings Skyway, south of I-80. CHP arrived on scene and determined the pursued vehicle had left the roadway and overturned. During the crash sequence, the driver and only occupant was ejected.

The driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. This crash is still under investigation.
