CROCKETT, Calif – Detectives assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Golden Gate Division (GGD) Special Investigations Unit (SIU), with the assistance of the CHP Contra Costa Area Office, have arrested 25-year-old Kevonte Markee Young of Pittsburg, Calif. after identifying him as the main suspect in a shooting in the Contra Costa Area.
On Oct.26, 2023, at approximately 7:05 p.m., officers assigned to the CHP’s Contra Costa Area office were advised of a freeway shooting with injuries that occurred on eastbound Interstate 80 (I-80) near Pomona Street in Crocket. The victim called 911 to report they had been struck in the leg by gunfire after being involved in a road rage incident with a dark blue Mercedes. Following the incident, the driver of the Mercedes pulled to the left of the victim and fired multiple rounds at the victim, striking them once in the leg. Fortunately, no other occupants in the vehicle, including three children, were injured in the shooting. The victim drove to their home where an ambulance transported them to a local hospital for treatment.
With the information provided by the victim, a broadcast was put out to law enforcement agencies in the area to be on the lookout for the Mercedes. Shortly after the broadcast, officers assigned to the Contra Costa Area office located the Mercedes and conducted a traffic enforcement stop without incident. Young was taken into custody and subsequently booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of attempted murder, discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, assault with a firearm, child endangerment, and illegal possession of a firearm.
