SACRAMENTO, Calif — This week the Assembly Public Safety Committee rejected AB 3037 (Essayli) which would have restored the firearm sentencing enhancement for criminals who use a firearm in the commission of a felony.
“I am disgusted by Democrat politicians who pretend to care about stopping gun violence, but refuse to punish the criminals who use guns to commit horrific crimes. As a former prosecutor I know that gun violence has exploded in California because criminals are not being held behind bars as a result of soft-on-crime policies out of Sacramento. That’s why I authored AB 3037 to restore the firearm sentencing enhancement to lock up any criminal who dares to use a firearm to commit a crime.” Assemblyman Bill Essayli remarked.
“However, Democrats on the Assembly Public Safety Committee hide behind front organizations like Moms Demand Action to protect criminals rather than victims. It is shameful — Californians deserve better.” Assemblyman Bill Essayli added.

Note Democrats also killed another gun safety bill in AB 3038 which would have required an armed school resource officer present on every public school in California.
Essayli Blasts Moms Demand Action
Let’s talk about these phony organizations I see everyday in the California Legislature. There is a group called @MomsDemand that pretends they are a concerned group of grassroots moms who care about gun violence. But for some reason they only support bills that strip the constitutional rights of Americans to own firearms. I thought maybe this was just a fluke. So what did I do? I introduced a bill that actually goes after criminal gun violence. #AB3037 would restore the firearm enhancement in California and adds a 20 year prison sentence to any criminal who uses a gun during the commission of a serious felony (i.e. murder, robbery, rape, kidnapping, etc.) So did @MomsDemand jump on to support my bill?! No, they played politics and pretend they’re unable to support the bill because some other group @Everytown won’t let them. I guess gun violence matters until it doesn’t fit their political narrative.
@MomsDemand should be ashamed of themselves for playing on peoples emotions and pretending to be an honest group of moms who care about the welfare of innocent Californians.
Editors Note – another gun safety bill killed.
Under AB 3037 – This bill would make the provision relating to the dismissal of enhancements inapplicable to firearms-related enhancements, but would allow the court to dismiss these firearm-related enhancements pursuant to the court’s general authority to dismiss an action, as specified.– killed
Under AB 3038 – This bill would require a school district or charter school to hire or contract with at least one armed school resource officer, as defined, authorized to carry a loaded firearm to be present at each school of the school district or charter school during regular school hours and any other time when pupils are present on campus. By imposing an additional requirement on school districts and charter schools, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program. — killed
