The California Highway Patrol – Tracy says a wrong-way driver was arrested for DUI while also having an 18-month older passenger in the vehicle.
According to CHP:
Thanks to 911 callers, and the swift action by CHP Tracy, a man driving a Mercedes eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-580, was located and stopped before tragedy struck.
On April 20, 2024, at approximately 1948 hours, Officer Zelaya responded to the call and observed the Mercedes approaching head-on, at high rate of speed, on I-580 westbound, west of Corral Hollow Road. As the last line of defense between the wrong-way driver and motorists in the surrounding area, Officer Zelaya ran a traffic break and activated his patrol vehicles Code 3 emergency lights and siren. Fortunately, the wrong way driver reacted to the emergency lights and safely stopped in the center median.
The driver, a 29 year old male, showed signs of impairment, and was subsequently arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
There was an 18 month old passenger inside the vehicle. The baby was transported to the CHP Tracy office where he was safely reunited with his mother.
The driver will face a number of Felony charges, including child endangerment.
No injuries were sustained to law enforcement, the involved driver, the 18 month old passenger, or any members of the public.
