March 12-25: El Cerrito Police Calls

The following is a sampling of the El Cerrito Police Calls reported between March 12-25  which focuses on the higher priority call responses in the City of El Cerrito.

The following is a summary of criminal activity for the El Cerrito Police Department. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.

 

Assault With Deadly Weapon

  • 3/22 – San Pablo Ave / Moeser Ln.  At 9:01 PM, officers observed two subjects fighting on the sidewalk.  One of the subjects walked away after from the scene and was detained down the street.  It was later determined the suspect was peeping through the window of a motel room and was chased off.  When the suspect was confronted on the sidewalk, the suspect hit the victim in the face with a glass candle.  Both, the suspect and victim were transported to the hospital.  After being medically cleared, the suspect was transported to county jail.

 

Battery

  • 3/14 – Parking lot of 10650 San Pablo Ave (CVS): At 9:21 PM an officer reports the victim was seated inside his vehicle with the windows rolled down when an unknown suspect threw a liquid substance hitting the vehicle and the victim.  No injuries reported.
  • 3/15 – 3300 block of Belmont Ave: At approximately 5:32 PM officers responded to a fight involving 4-5 individuals.  The victim attempted to intervene and was punched in the face by a suspect.  The subjects involved in the fight fled in their vehicles prior to police arrival.
  • 3/17 – San Pablo Ave/ Carlson Blvd:  At 8:16 PM, an officer reports the victim was sitting at the bus stop when the suspect thought the victim had taken something from their bag. The suspect punched the victim several times in the face with their fists. Several witnesses began yelling at the suspect and they fled into the El Cerrito Plaza.
  • 3/21 – 10900 block of San Pablo Ave.  At 9:58 PM, the victim reported getting into a Lyft at 12:45 PM on 3/21/23 and got sprayed with Lysol.
  • 3/23 – 3090 El Cerrito Plaza (Starbucks)  At 2:04 PM the suspect was placed under citizen’s arrest after they threw food at an employee, after being told to leave for bothering customers. The suspect was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and released on a citation.

 

Brandishing Weapon

  • 3/15 – 11300 block of San Pablo Ave: At 8:51 PM an officer reports an unknown suspect approached the victim on foot and threatened to kill the victim after brandishing a knife. The victim drove away and called the police to report the incident. Officers canvassed the area and did not locate the suspect. At 9:38 pm, an officer located a subject who matched the description of the suspect in the same area. The officer obtained the subject’s name and conduct follow-up with a photo array the next day. The victim identified the subject the officer had contacted as the suspect.  The case will be forwarded to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges filed on the suspect.

 

Burglary

  • 3/12 – 10636 San Pablo Ave (24 Hour Fitness):  At 10:57 PM, an officer reports a suspect broke into the victim’s secured locker and stole the victim’s property. The theft occurred in between 9:30 PM and-10:53 PM.
  • 3/13 – 5800 block of El Dorado Ave: At 8:13 AM the suspect kept banging on the victims door and removed window screens to several other residences in the area.  Officers were unable to locate the suspect at this time.  At 9:39 AM the same suspect attempted to open the front door to a residence in the 5600 block of Central Ave.  Officers located the suspect and learned he had three warrants for his arrest.  The suspect was arrested, booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.  (Attempted Burglary & Warrants)
  • 3/20 – 10636 San Pablo Ave (24 Hour Fitness):  At 9:35 AM, an officer reports an unidentified suspect broke in to a locker in the women’s locker room, removed a purse and stole car keys.  The purse was later located stuffed in another locker.  The car was rifled through but no known loss.  Occurred between 3:30-5:30 PM on 3/17.
  • 3/20 – 5300 block of Potrero Ave:  At 10:27 AM, two unidentified suspects entered an enclosed sun room at the rear of the residence, then shattered the sliding glass door that led in to the residence.  The occupants of the residence went to check on the noise made by the breaking glass and scared the intruders off.
  • 3/20 – 900 block of Kearney St:  At 10:57 AM, an officer reports the victim’s claims that an unidentified suspect had been breaking in to their garage / storage unit for over a year now.
  • 3/23 – 10636 San Pablo Ave (24-hour Fitness). Between the hours of 11:05 PM – 11:30 PM, an unknown suspect broken into a locker and stole a bag containing personal items.  After fleeing the scene, at 11:37 PM, the victim’s debit card was used at Nations in El Cerrito.

 

DUI

  • 3/21 – 400 block of Kearney St.  At 11:46 PM, the owner arrived home to find a vehicle parked in their carport of the apartment complex.  When asked to move, the driver drove away in the vehicle and crashed into a parked vehicle.  The driver was highly intoxicated and arrested for drunk driving.  The driver gave a blood sample and was released on a citation to a sober friend.

 

Grand Theft

  • 3/13 – 6600 block of Barrett Ave: On March 10th from 7:30am to 1:30pm, victim’s catalytic converter was stolen from their vehicle.
  • 3/17 – 1800 block of Liberty St:
    At 8:34 AM, an officer reports theft of license plates from a 2007 Mitsubishi sometime between 10:45 PM on 3/16/2023 and 8:30 AM on 3/17/2023.
  • 3/19 – 900 block of Avis Dr:  At 8:24 AM, an officer reports the catalytic converter was stolen from a Toyota Prius between 3/17/2023 at 9:00 PM and 3/18/2023 at 9:00 AM.
  • 3/20 – 10650 San Pablo Ave (CVS):  At 12:24 PM, two unidentified suspects left the store, each carrying a backpack full of unpaid cosmetics worth an estimated $1000.
  • 3/22 – 5500 block of MacDonald Ave.  At 5:18 AM, officers responded to a catalytic converter theft in progress.  The victim yelled at the suspects who then fled the scene in a vehicle.  Total loss, $1,500.
  • 3/25 – 1600 block of Everett St:  At 9:20 AM, an officer reports the theft of a Trek mountain bike worth $2000, between 8:40-9:00 AM.

 

Petty Theft

  • 3/21 – 1700 block Elm St. From March 20th at 9:00 PM to March 21st at 1:00 PM, the victim’s license plates were stolen from their vehicle.
  • 3/24 – 11060 San Pablo Ave (Harbor Freight Tools):  At 8:34 AM, an officer responded to a lobby detail regarding the theft of a backpack from atop a shopping cart while the victim was shopping at Harbor Freight.  Occurred at 6:30 PM on 3/16/2023.

 

Robbery

  • 3/14 0 1000 El Cerrito Plaza (Lucky): At 7:04 PM an officer reports the suspect entered the store and selected merchandise and walked towards the front of the store.  When employees attempted to stop the suspect, the suspect pushed past the employees and a struggle ensued over the stolen merchandise.  The employees were able to recover the property and the suspect fled the scene. (Attempted)
  • 3/16 – 11794 San Pablo Ave. (Marshalls): At 8:33 PM an officer reports two suspects entered the store and began loading duffle bags with merchandise. Loss Prevention agents contacted the suspects and asked them to pay for the merchandise. The suspects walked up to the cash register line as if they were going to pay. Moments later both suspects walked towards the front door and attempted to exit when contacted by security, one of the suspects brandished a Taser. Both suspects fled the store with stolen merchandise.

 

 

Shoplift

  • 3/12 – 2000 El Cerrito Plaza (Ross): At 10:47 AM, an unidentified suspect stole merchandise from the store and fled.
  • 3/13 – 1000 El Cerrito Plaza (Lucky): At 7:13 PM the suspect entered the store and stole food and fled the store.
  • 3/13 – 1000 El Cerrito Plaza (Lucky):   At 7:13 PM an officer reports the suspect exited the business without paying for merchandise.
  • 3/14 – 670 El Cerrito Plaza (CVS): At 9:16 PM an officer reports the suspect entered the store and selected several items.  As the suspect exited the store with the stolen merchandise, they were detained by officers.  The suspect also had an outstanding felony arrest warrant from Marin County for burglary.  The suspect was arrested, booked at ECPD, and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
  • 3/15 – Skechers 5805 Cutting Blvd. At approximately 3:57 PM the suspect entered the store and stole merchandise and fled the business.
  • 3/17 – 11545 San Pablo Ave (Ross):  At 9:52 PM, an officer conducted a security check at Ross when he was flagged down by an employee in regards to a theft. The officer detained the suspect without incident and the suspect was placed under Citizen’s Arrest by the employee. The suspect was issued a citation and released at the scene.
  • 3/18 – 5805 Cutting Blvd (Sketchers):  At 11:22 AM, an unidentified suspect stole two pairs of shoes.  When asked if he was going to pay he fled the business on foot toward the BART station.
  • 3/18 – 6050 El Cerrito Plaza (Barnes & Noble):  At 12:32 PM, a repeat offender known to store employees stole merchandise and fled the store.
  • 3/18 – 11545 San Pablo Ave (Ross):  At 12:44 PM, a repeat offender known to store employees selected merchandise and fled the store without paying for it.
  • 3/18 – 2000 El Cerrito Plaza (Ross):  At 9:03 PM, an officer was dispatched to an unwanted subject known to shoplift. Upon arrival the officer’s arrival, the suspect had fled the store with unpaid merchandise.
  • 3/21 – 5805 Cutting Blvd. (Skechers) At 12:45 PM, the suspect stole (3) pairs of shoes and a backpack. The suspect fled towards the Del Norte BART station

 

Stolen Vehicle

  • 3/13 – 200 Block of Ramona Ave: At 5:11 PM the victims’ vehicle was stolen from the driveway.  The vehicle was recovered later that evening in San Pablo.
  • 3/13 – 200 block of Ramona Ave:  At 6:54 PM an officer reports the victim left his car keys in the door lock of his pickup parked in front of the residence. Around 5:11 PM, an unknown suspect stole the victim’s vehicle. The incident was captured on video surveillance. The vehicle was later located by San Pablo PD in their city unoccupied.
  • 3/14 – 11700 block of San Pablo Ave: The victim left their keys in their parked vehicle from 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM and when they returned their vehicle had been stolen.
  • 3/15 – Schmidt Ln/ Kearney St. At 4:39 AM an officer located the victim’s 2000 Lincoln Continental that had been reported stolen to the Oakland PD on 3/14/2023. Officers conducted an enforcement stop and arrested the driver.  The driver was booked at ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
  • 3/21 – 10650 San Pablo Ave (CVS parking lot).  At 4:00 AM, officers located a parked stolen vehicle.  The driver was asleep in the driver’s seat.  The driver was arrested and transported to county jail.
  • 3/23 – 800 block of Arlington Blvd. The victim’s vehicle was stolen on March 23rd from 12:30 AM to 8:00 AM.

 

Theft

  • 3/21 – 500 block Albemarle St.  At 11:39 AM an officer reports that last week an unknown suspect called the victims and identified themselves as an Apple employee.  The suspect told the victim that they were in trouble with the FBI for visiting illegal websites.  The victim was told to make wire transfers to four different accounts to exonerate them from being prosecuted.

 

Vandalism

  • 3/17 – 2300 block of Tamalpais Ave:  At 10:51 AM, while investigating the above vehicle tampering, the officer was flagged down by a neighbor who reported an unidentified suspect shattered the right rear window of his parked Audi at 5:24 AM this morning.  There was surveillance video footage of the incident.
  • 3/17 – 1700 block of Lexington Ave:  At 9:41 PM, officers were dispatched to a suspicious person detail. The caller reported several subjects were going through their garbage bins. Officers responded to the residence and located a broken window to a home that was under remodel. Officers located and detained a suspect that was inside the house. The homeowner was contacted and placed the suspect under Citizen’s Arrest. After booking, the suspect was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
  • 3/24 – 10740 San Pablo Ave (Donut Time):  At 7:08 AM, an officer reports the front door glass at Donut Time was shattered sometime overnight.  Mountain Mike’s Pizza next door also sustained similar damage.  No apparent entry.

 

Vehicle Tampering

  • 3/14 – 6400 block of Schmidt Ave.: At approximately 4:45 PM a subject was arrested after he was found sleeping in a resident’s vehicle that was parked in the carport.  The subject was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
  • 3/14 – 700 block of Richmond St: An unknown suspect shattered a window to the victim’s vehicle and damaged the ignition.  The incident occurred on March 13th at 4:00 PM to March 14th at 5:00 PM.
  • 3/17 – 2300 block of Tamalpais Ave:  At 9:18 AM, an officer reports unidentified suspects jacked up a Toyota Prius and partially cut the catalytic converter in an apparent attempt to steal it.  The suspects were scared off by an alarm and left empty-handed.  Surveillance video footage existed that showed the time of occurrence as 5:23 AM.
  • 3/17 – 800 block of Kearney St:  At 6:20 PM, an officer reports an unknown suspect entered the victim’s unsecured vehicle and caused damage to the ignition, but was unable to start the vehicle. The suspect then stole the radio. The incident occurred in between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM on March 17th.

 

Vehicle Theft

  • 3/25 – 300 block of Pomona Ave:  At 11:13 AM, an officer reports the theft of a white 2007 Jaguar during the previous ten minutes.

 

Warrant

  • 3/19 – 11344 San Pablo Ave. (Denny’s): At 11:12 PM, an officer was dispatched to the business for an unwanted subject. The subject was contacted and detained.  During a records check officers discovered the subject had an active warrant out of Solano County. During a search incident to arrest the subject was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine. After booking, the subject was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
  • 3/20 – Parking lot of 11450 San Pablo Ave (Safeway):  At 7:43 PM, an officer checked the license plate of a vehicle and discovered one of the plates had been reported stolen. The officer conducted an enforcement stop on the vehicle and discovered the driver had an outstanding warrant for their arrest.  The suspect was booked at the El Cerrito PD and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
