Antioch

On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council agreed to direct staff to prepare an ordinance to increase city council pay.

With the direction, the council pay will increase from $1,604 per month to $1,900 per month and will not take effect until the next city council is seated after the November 2024 election.

The item came at the end of the meeting as they were trying to wrap up the meeting, lasted all of 3-minutes with no discussion where Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe called for a quick yes or no… at that point, direction was provided with 4 councilmembers saying “yes”–its unclear if Councilwoman Lori Ogorchock said yes or no based on how the consensus was gathered.

Based on the parameters in SB 329, the City of Antioch falls into the category of 75,000 to 150,000 population which allows council pay up to $1,900 per month ($22,800 per year).

Back in August 2023, the City of Concord took a similar step and increased their council pay to $1,900 per month.

SB 329 Increases Council Pay

Under SB 329 which was signed into law—the bill increases compensation that councilmembers of general law cities may receive for their work.  The bill was introduced by Senator Bill Dodd (D-Napa).

Based on the parameters in SB 329, the City of Antioch falls into the category of 75,000 to 150,000 population which allows council pay up to $1,900 per month ($22,800 per year).

Senate Bill 329 also authorizes the salary of council members to be increased beyond the specified maximum to an amount not exceeding the greater of either 5% for each calendar year from the effective date of the last adjustment of the salary or an amount equal to inflation since January 1, 2024, based on the California Consumer Price Index (not to exceed 10% per calendar year).

This city council does NOT deserve a pay raise. The only things they have done up to this point have negative outcomes, negative perception from Antioch residents and self-promotion such as this pay raise. WE NEED TO VOTE *** O U T *** THESE BAD ACTORS IN 2024!!!
