Driver Dead in Overturned Vehicle Crash on I-680 in Concord

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Saturday morning in the City of Concord.

According to preliminary information, the 4:30 am solo vehicle crash occurred at northbound Highway 680 at Highway 242 in which it was reported that a vehicle overturned and then exploded.  The driver was declared deceased on scene.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters and AMR also responded to the scene.  It was reported the F-150 vehicle also struck an overpass sign which also left it burnt and bent.

By 5:42 am, the county coroner was on scene.

No other information was released.

4:25 PM CHP UPDATE: Solo vehicle fatal crash on I-680 near Concord

This morning (4/29/23) at about 4:33am, CHP Contra Costa was advised of a solo vehicle crash on northbound I-680 at the SR-242 split. A white Ford F-150, occupied by one driver, was traveling northbound on I-680 when it collided with a large metal column, that holds a freeway overpass sign, on the right shoulder. CHP and emergency personnel arrived on scene and the driver (adult male) was pronounced deceased.

Our preliminary investigation indicates the Ford was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash. This crash is still under investigation, if anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact CHP Contra Costa in Martinez, (925) 646-4980

We were driving and saw that vehicle off right outside the freeway – flames engulfing this truck. I knew somebody was probably in there. It was horrifying. I hope his family has some peace.
