Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce Responds to Target’s Closure Decision

Pittsburg Chamber

The Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce expresses its regret and concern over the recent announcement by Target Corporation to close its Pittsburg, California location, attributing the decision to “high shoplifting.”

While the decision of a renowned business to close its doors is always a significant matter, it is crucial to put the context into perspective. The city of Pittsburg, particularly its Police Department, has proactively fought against organized retail theft.  Our police force’s dedication to ensuring a safe and business-friendly environment is unwavering, as evidenced by their consistent efforts and commitment to safety.

However, it is essential to understand that organized retail theft is not just a Pittsburg challenge but a widespread concern faced by numerous cities nationwide. This multifaceted issue demands coordinated efforts at local, state, and national levels.

CEO Wolfgang Croskey notes, “It’s a larger battle and one that extends beyond the boundaries of our beloved Pittsburg.  Our city has always shown resilience and unity, and while we respect Target’s decision, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering a thriving and secure business environment.  We urge all stakeholders – businesses, communities, and law enforcement agencies – to come together and address the larger issues at hand.”

The Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce remains dedicated to working hand-in-hand with businesses, law enforcement, and the community to ensure a thriving, secure, and prosperous economic future.

It is not a Target problem. It is a culture problem.

I agree it’s a widespread problem (per targets post they also list closures of stores in other states). However, once upon a time we had a Raleys on Buchanan road and even when that closed, another supermarket opened, but had also closed a few tears ago. Since then no one has moved into the space. We need another supermarket. Yet instead we see businesses leaving daily. The spillover of the increasing crime in Antioch also isn’t helping Pittsburg or the other surrounding areas. Instead of a press release begging for more businesses not to leave, let’s be more proactive. Let’s hold thieves accountable by voting for laws that do that for one. If you really want to “come together” then do so in ways that matter. There’s strength in numbers and actions are what bring about change.

Statements mean nothing when a prolonged problem is allowed to persist to the point that a business is forced to close its doors rather than remain open and be robbed daily. Shame on all the legislators who wear blinders and push thru dumb bills everyday instead of addressing “real” problems in our state.

I’ve literally seen shoplifters walk out with a shopping cart full of items. You can’t expect a 65 year old security guard making $20.00 hr to really be effective.

Raleys on Buchanan, CVS on Atlantic, Target at Century Blvd, POSCO on Antioch highway. It’s becoming a city with no jobs and no place to shop.

Yeah well the Pittsburg PD obviously didn’t fight hard enough, that Target was in a doomed location though and it’s obvious probably a solid 90% of the workforce in there as well as the shoplifters are actually from Antioch… since Pittsburg PD didn’t want to work in conjunction with Antioch PD on this to stop the crime going on inside the store, presumably a hundred or so people lost their jobs, and the city of Pittsburg lost the taxes as well as a valuable member of their business society.

Plug The Hole! September 27, 2023 - 3:07 pm

Granted crime is a problem in East County and Antioch has its fair share of issues, however let’s not pretend that your numbers assigning 90% of theft in Target stores to Antioch residents are anything more than conjecture. If you have a report that suggests otherwise, please link it for all to read. Responsibility for the state of East County retail theft lies squarely with the criminals who steal without fear of consequences and lawmakers who refuse to do anything to plug the gaping hole in the law that allowed runaway theft to take hold in the first place.

Several months ago a State Assemblyman presented a bill to repeal prop 47. The bill was voted down in committee meaning they didn’t want the public to vote to repeal. Lawlessness is being perpetuated by our so called “Leaders”

Failed Legislators September 27, 2023 - 3:28 pm

That’s because they’re all running scared. They know it’s the right thing to do but all they’re concerned with is getting re-elected so they look the other way. They’re failing this state on multiple levels.

CVS on Atlantic moved prescriptions to CVS Target in July which is now closing and moving where? This leaves Walgreens as the only pharmacy on this side of the city.

Meanwhile, while the city is losing retailers, two members of the city council are in the running for District 5 supervisor, and the entire city council is invested in building out the western end of the city. They have buried their heads and have no interest in the eastern side of the city. It’s as if they want to turn it into Antioch.

Pittsburg needs District city council representation instead of the at large format it is now.
