Veterans Day

The  VFW Post 10789 was honored to be invited to three schools to help celebrate Veterans Day. It was a pleasure for our Color Guard to present the Colors at Old River School, Pioneer Elementary School, and Excelsior Middle School.

Meeting the students and seeing the smiles on their faces was priceless. And to help all of them understand the true meaning of Veterans Day is an honor for which we give thanks.

It is more than just a day off from school or work, and I think these students understand that.

All together, we interacted with over 1,300 smart, energetic, respectful, well-mannered, creative, awesome students. All of you Parents, Teachers, Staff, and Administrators should be PROUD!

Highlights:
Old River School
  • Speech by Harvey at Old River School – heartfelt and meaningful for both students and adults.
  • Fantastic support from Law Enforcement.
  • Great to see our Farmers honored.
  • Outstanding welcome and support for Veterans.
Pioneer Elementary School
  • Outstanding welcome and greeting for Veterans from all Administrators, Staff, and Teachers.
  • Students made cards for some of us that we took with us and will always treasure.
  • They recognized Parent Veterans and let the introduce themselves to the students.
  • The BEST Pledge of Allegiance we have ever heard!!! It was said by all students, hundreds of them, without any rushing the words, and it was LOUD, without yelling, and it just was so powerful!
  • The students were very kind and gracious.
  • When we were leaving, we passed by a group returning to class. I said thank you for inviting us to you school. A young girl looked at me and said to this old infantry soldier, “One day I’m going to be like you.” That was outstanding! I replied and told her, “No, you will be better than me.”
Excelsior Middle School
  • Fantastic welcome from the Principal!
  • The band was outstanding!
  • The students were were right on time, and very respectful which is great to see from Middle School students.
  • Loved to see that the tradition of the Peace Posters is going strong and supported by the Lions Clubs of Byron and Discovery Bay.
  • Great to see support from the School Board and Superintendent.
  • Loved that Parents and Grandparents who are Veterans were recognized and given time to speak.
  • Wow. Yes, that was a lot. And then Excelsior school graciously provided lunch for the Veterans too!
All of this happened yesterday before noon. It was a very busy morning!!! Thank you to all the Schools, Administrators, Principals, Staff, and especially the students. Thank you to all the veteran Parents and Grandparents.
Finally, thank you to the VFW Color Guard for taking the day off work, driving all around town and making this happen:

Harold Dominguez
Dennis Sikorski

Veterans, thank you for sharing your day with us at Excelsior. It was so great to hear your stories and experiences. Thank you for your service and for educating our students about what it means to serve. You are greatly appreciated.
