Meals on Wheels Diablo Region welcomes Chevron Corporation, NBC Bay Area, and Telemundo 48 as sponsors of the 4th annual Feed the Soul Campaign that provides Breakfast Bags to food insecure seniors. Each year, MOW Diablo Region’s goal is to raise $1,000 a day during the month of February, and because this year is a Leap Year, the organization hopes to raise $29,000 in 29 days!
“For food insecure seniors, that extra day on Leap Year is another day our older neighbors will have to worry about having enough to eat,” says Caitlin Sly, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Diablo Region. “The support of Chevron, NBC Bay Area, and Telemundo 48 will help us raise the extra funds so more people can receive free Breakfast Bags.”
MOW Diablo Region currently provides seven meals a week to homebound elders. For many, the meal they receive each day is the only meal they eat, and divide it between lunch and dinner, often putting some aside so they have food to take with their medications. Adding breakfast to their daily meals can make the difference between hunger and good health for older adults in need. Breakfast Bags are delivered each week and are filled with a week’s worth of fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, string cheese, hard boiled eggs, snackable vegetables, sandwiches, and salad.
This year’s Feed the Soul campaign goal of raising $29,000 during the 29 days of February will help MOW Diablo Region provide over 5,000 breakfasts to vulnerable seniors. One appreciative senior got to the heart of the matter when she called the Breakfast Bags, “food for the soul.”
