On Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 7:00AM Oakley Police Officer Collier was on patrol and he saw a man dragging a hand dolly through the open field south of O’Hara Court in the city of Oakley.
The hand dolly was loaded with boxes and the scenario seemed suspicious to Officer Collier. His suspicion was further fortified by the fact the man took off running and jumping over fences as soon as he saw Officer Collier leaving the hand dolly and boxes behind.
Officer Collier immediately thought criminal activity was afoot and he called for his partners to respond to establish a perimeter in the area. Due to the size of the area to be contained Sergeant Morris requested the assistance of Deputy Sheriff’s from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Delta Station.
While the perimeter was being established Officer Collier investigated the area he had first seen the man and discovered an outbuilding had been entered via a cut open metal wall and there were obvious signs of theft. While the area was being searched an Oakley resident, who resides on O’Hara Court, called in to report seeing an unknown male hiding in their backyard.
By this time Sergeant Morris had also requested a canine team from the Pittsburg Police Department. Collectively officers from the Oakley Police Department and the canine team from the Pittsburg Police Department entered the backyard.
The male appeared to start making some good decisions as he went into the custody of our officers without putting up any resistance.
The male is identified as Eddie Martinez (46, Oakley). Martinez is a career criminal who has served several prison sentences. Martinez was arrested for burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of ammunition while being a convicted felon and obstructing officers.
Martinez had to be hospitalized for issues related to what we believe are a drug overdose. The Oakley Police Department will seek formal charges against Martinez via the District Attorney’s Office and a Parole Violation via the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The Oakley Police Department appreciates the assistance of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and the Pittsburg Police Department. We further appreciate the working relationship we have with the Oakley community and we always support our residents calling us when they suspect something is wrong.
