Contra Costa County Office of Education Releases Annual Report

The Contra Costa County Office of Education has released its 2021-2022 Annual Report to the community which aims to showcase accomplishments over the past year by agency, county school districts, its schools and students.

However, the report also shows Contra Costa County has declining enrollment as last year saw 169,604 students enrolled in Contra Costa County, its lowest enrollment figure since 2011-12.

In April, California Department of Education reported statewide enrollment fell by 1.8%. This is a decrease of more than 110,000 students and 1.8 percent from the prior year. (see release). In Contra Costa County, they saw a decline of 3,417 students between the 2020-21 school year and 2021-22.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The report also shows enrollment by Ethnicity:

  • 37.7% – Hispanic or Latino
  • 26.1% – White
  • 13.8% – Asian
  • 8.2% – African American
  • 6.9% – Two or More Races
  • 4.2% – Filipino
  • 0.6% – Pacific Islander
  • 2.2% – Not reported
  • 0.3% – American Indian or Alaska Native

The report also showcases additional data in total enrollment:

  • English Learners – 28,082 (16.6%)
  • Foster Youth – 482 (0.03%)
  • Homeless Youth – 1,694 (1.0%)
  • Migrant Education – 10 (0.0%)
  • Student w/Disabilities – 21,130 (12.5%)
  • Socioeconomically disadvantaged – 68,891 (38.2%)

The report also includes information about the county’s Board of Education, school funding, how the agency serves its most vulnerable students, and more.

The report shows students in Foster Care and experiencing homelessness:

Students in Foster Care:

  • 2021-22: 681
  • 2020-21: 797
  • 2019-20: 842
  • 2018-19: 948
  • 2017-18: 1,062

Students Experiencing Homelessness:

  • 2021-22: 1,694
  • 2020-21: 2,271
  • 2019-20: 2,680
  • 2018-19: 2,896
  • 2017-18: 2,437

The report did show some wins for the county as Burton Valley Elementary School became the third in the Lafayette School District to earn a National Blue Ribbon School Award. Five schools, four districts won pivotal practice awards in 2022.

  • Rocketship Delta Prep (Antioch Unified School District)
  • Rocketship Future Academy (Mt. Diablo Unified School District)
  • Quail Run Elementary School (San Ramon Valley Unified School District)
  • West County Mandarin School (West County Unified School District)

Meanwhile in the City of Brentwood, Edna Hill Middle School was named 2022 California School to watch. This was the sixth time the Brentwood Union School District school has been name a “school to watch” by the California Department of Education—the distinction is awarded to schools who showcase sustained progress as a high-performing California Middle School.

Seven Contra Costa County Public Schools won their division at the Odyssey of the Mind NorCal State competition and four placed in the top 10 at the 2022 World Finals.

  • 2nd Place – Wagner Ranch Elementary School, Orinda – ranked #2 for Problem 2, Division 1
  • 3rd Place – Mt. Diablo Elementary School, Clayton – ranked #3 for Problem 5, Division 1
  • 6th Place – Moraga Rotary, Moraga – ranked #6 for Problem 3, Division 3
  • 8th Place – Stanley Middle School, Lafayette – ranked #8 for Problem 3, Division 2
