County Hazmat Responds to Rail-cars in City of Oakley

At 10:00 pm Friday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of an odor coming from the area of 4th Street and Main Street in the City of Oakley.

Upon further investigation, this was coming from the railroad tracks area for some sort of hazardous material spill–later determined to be liquid oxygen.

The incident prompted a brief shelter-in-place for about an hour.

11:15 pm: UPDATE

Contra Costa County Fire Department is requesting all in the following areas Shelter in Place due to a hazardous chemicals emergency near 4th Street and Main Street. The danger will be much less indoors. Go inside, and close all windows and doors. Turn off all heaters, air conditioners, and fans. Unless you are using your fireplace, close your fireplace dampers and vents. Cover any cracks around doors or windows with tape or damp towels. Stay off the phone unless you need to report a life-threatening emergency at your location. Remain sheltered indoors until you receive further official instructions.

11:47 pm: UPDATE

This is a message from Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. An `All Clear` has been issued for the hazardous materials incident in Oakley, near 4th Street and Main Street. The emergency situation has ended. Please feel free to resume normal activities.

Oakley Police Release Statement Saturday Morning

Last night around 11:15PM a train was stopped in Oakley alongside Main Street. At some point one of the train cars was seen spewing an unknown gas and that car was closest to Main St. and 4th St. Due to the material being unknown at the time a shelter in place was called for. About an hour later it was determined the car was carrying liquid oxygen and it was doing a natural release of some of its material. It was determined there was no threat to the community and the shelter in place was lifted.
